I think it's time to buy a cordless impact wrench, whats currently good?

I was looking at a Milwaukee one (with 610Nm!!) Can you possibly have too much power? (for just changing car wheels)?

What have you used, what's good?

I've got Milwauke cordless drill and driver 18v li-ion and it freaking rocks but i'd go for the 28V if i was you. Alot of steel workers use them so they would have to be good enough for wheel nuts

Ive used the snap on 18v one several times. It works well. Its fast and tightens them up well. Also removes them with ease.

Yes please, as long as it has enough juice to UNCRACK wheel nuts, reasonably fast charge (1hr?) and a decent carry case.

Another vote for anything 18V plus and Lithium. My DeWalt was pretty good with the NiMH battery, but is way way better with the new Lithium one.

I don't think the same applies to normal wheel nuts but I found the cordless ones (even the Snap On CT4850) would struggle a little bit on the centre wheel nuts when it's really hot. It's fine once it cools down a bit.

This is the one I bought. Not cordless or light.

If you go to the Snap-on site they say they are no longer being sold ???

I was looking at the larger of the Makita range. Not cheap though.

Tell me you're not using that on the wheel nuts!

Dunc i'll make a call tomorrow and get you a price.. And yep 40 min charge on a 3ah battery

Tell me you're not using that on the wheel nuts!

Yep :) Probably overkill on normal wheel nuts. It's the only one that has enough torque to loosen the centre nuts 100% of the time.

I have Kinchrome one...Absolute beaut! Undoes the hardest tightest bolts with ease!

PS... If you use it a bit for HD applications then you will find that the hammer and anvil impacting faces will be rounded, reducing the torque output a LOT...

Bye bye 1KNm :bash:

Dale what sort of power does the snap on unit have? how long does it take to charge approx. and how long does it last you reckon?

Kyle is yours really only 30mins to charge? have you used it yourself and is 440nm enough to crack a nut done up to 125nm easily? I know 440 is a bigger number than 125 but that doesnt necessarily mean much.

Dunc I have been using the snap on for 3 years. I initially bought it for our business, had back to back comparisons with blue point and wurth air rattle guns. Has the power of top air guns. Torque is sustained quite well with battery drain.

Go with whats proven. One downside is the release characteristic. Air guns stop very quickly with air resistance so overtightening is lessened. The snap on just coasts down to a stop. I've seen other battery operated impact wrenches which incorporate a brake after trigger release, I think dewalt or milwakee. I use kinchrome torque limiting sockets with the gun, they tighten to 100nm and click over there after. I then use a torque wrench to about 110nm. Surprisingly accurate sockets.

Just some points to consider from my workshop experience.

Regarding the snap on charge time. You would realistically not use a 1/2 inch rechargeable rattle gun below 50% power. Full charge is less than 30 mins, possibly 20 min.

The kinchrome is shite and i would not recommend it.....:attn:

Snap On or Milwakee i reckon won't let you down, although i haven't got a Milwakee impact wrench. After using one of their drills at work for 6yrs, i bought one for home as the build quality is awsome and it is a durable product.

Yes, Snap On warranty on wear and tear does not exist just like any other product on the market, it would be unreasonable to sell a product like that and have a "lifetime" warranty. They will usually honour true warranty issues however if needed.

Clearly you're not a Snap-On fan mate ... but that's only $20 cheaper than the Snap-On price, bugger all. The way you've been going on I thought the Makita one would be half the price!

Snap-On has the reputation it has for a reason ... if the tools were shit people would stop buying them. They may be price at the top end of the scale but clearly most in the trade are prepared to pay for quality.

Not at all Nick!
I have a snap on ring spanner kit and a couple of strips of deep and shallow sockets, cost me a good dollar but I do love them.
PS, the price I gave dunc was not $20 cheaper, it was around $150 cheaper.

PPS, the Makita tool has 40nm more torque too btw

In fact, I couldn't give a shit what Duncan ends up buying to be honest.

Duncan you should just buy the snap on wrench mate.

Funny he says that because milwaukee's an American company too...lol

All cordless tools seem to come out of china these days, Makita, Dewalt, milwaukee, bosch, etc etc.. Quite possibly snap on too.

Apples and oranges imo. Our steel fixers use the 28V 1/2 inch drivers all day fixing off 24mm bolts and they drop them, treat them like crap and over heat them all the time but the still work just fine!

A mate had a hitachi 14.4v (http://www.sydneytools.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=1348&bc=no) cordless rattle gun last weekend at Bathurst, it serviced 5 cars for qualifying and 4 races which involved wheels off/on on all cars after each session. It never needed charging and buzzed the nuts off no worries at 85ft/lb-115nm no worries, we actually only nipped up the wheels as the impact driver was too powerful...... very happy... will use my mates again:dance:
