Tyres RE55 soft compound with old manufacture date. 265/35/18. Actual tread width was 280mm
Good grip for 2 to 2.5 laps and go off fast. At Hidden valley they did 1.26min average lap times. I found them great for one fast lap but would get slower each lap after. They warmed up very fast and general driving for a warm up lap is plenty. Managed a best when brand new of 1.24.1 as a one off when they were brand new but could generally only do 1.26s normally. Bloody outstanding for ridding under steer but seemed less grippy on the back wheels. In the wet not much good at all. Very slippery tyres in the wet but they are fat and not allot of tread. Great for one lappers if you can get them new and do one perfect lap.
Yoko 050 medium compound fronts and soft on the back. New tyres with a very recent manufacture date. 265/35/18. Actual width 270mm if that.
Great grip out of the packet. After ainitial scrub in they performed very well. They seem to need a proper warm up lap with side to side and also plenty of warming up the brakes as usual. Stragith line grip off the start line is excellent. Just seemed never ending grip and I struggled to even to do a chirpy hitting second after taking off. Ont he first corner they felt like they were on song with great front end and rear end grip. They were very consistent and my lap times averaged 1.24s with clear track. Back end grip was great throughout but on the 3rd laps a little understeer starting to come into play. Part of that was finding the limits on grip too.
Next is the wet. They seemed never ending levels of grip. They were significantly better than street tyres from last time I drive around there in the wet. From the reports from the people watching they said the rooster tail behind the GTS was huge. I am told this generally means the tyres are moving a fair bit of water. Compared to other cars both on semi slicks and street tyres the rooster tail water spray was much bigger. Turn in on the wet was great and really the tyres were better than the driver. I did not have the nads to push it as far as the tyres would go. I was lapping 5 seconds a lap faster than the nearest car.
Summery: If you can nail a error free fast lap after a light warm up lap then the RE55 soft compound would be fine and on par with the medium 050s for one outright fast lap. I used the RE55 soft on a 2 tonne car and they worked fine for a couple of laps. The difference is the 050 medium compound you can do the same speed over three or more laps and if you are up to it dam consistently too. The other thing they seem to offer more back tyre traction off the line and out of corners. (note I have soft compound on the back). In addition the wet weather performance was excellent from the 050s.
Cheers
