Hey Phil,
I had the same thing recently with our Blu-ray ... went to the Sony website and got an update that I had to burn onto a CD and then put that CD in the Blu-Ray player. It read the disc and whirred away for about 20 minutes then spat the disc out and said "update complete" ... worked perfectly ever since.
Maybe try searching the manufacturers site for software updates ?
Good luck ...
thx nick will try tonight after work.

Don't drink (much), don't gamble, don't smoke, work hard ... Blu-Rays don't cost that much really (~ $700) ...

what i did was connect my bluray player to my router so it checks for updates then downloads it and installs it. much easier than manually looking for updates.
but if your manufacturer hasn't got an update yet for the new blurays you are pretty much screwed and it's pretty slack of them.
i got avatar also, i found it pretty boring exept the battle scene in the end. but the sound on that movie was pretty good listening it on DTS TRUE HD.
