View Full Version : Place your bets (427 for sale)
Last time this came up for sale:
http://www.pickles.com.au/cars/vehicle/CP-08-02-HRT-427-Coupe-2-Seats-2-Doors/itemid-1-103063591/lotid-0
I thought it would go for well less than $200k.
It sold for in excess of $800k!
Bit of a mystery as to why it's selling again now (apparently they guy has/had 60 collectible cars).
Obviously the collectibility value far exceeds the physical/parts value but what do you think it will go for?

Considering he bought when the market for these cars was going crazy ...
I reckon he'll loose > $500K on it. Why would anyone pay more than $250K for that? You could build one yourself for less than that and it'd be just as "collectible".
Still ... we were wrong last time, he just needs to find someone richer and dumber than him!
shouldnt shannons or some specialty auction/sale house be dealing with such a car though? strange.

That is not worth 250k even. I can not see why it is so special now the W427 has been and gone. It is just a old model and not even one with all the proper gear on it like the race ones.
The race 427 race car that is a different story. Still 250k max.
As mentioned I am sure someone too much money with just buy it for the sake of it.

I think there is more to that story, for the car to be at pickles and in that condition, im wondering if maybe the guy has gone belly up! looks like its bairly even had a wash, not how i would be a keeping a car i payed 800k for!!

exactly. you go to pickles to buy ex govt camrys with five billion k's on the clock, not something like this surely. cars like this 427 need to be SOLD to achieve huge bucks.

Buy it, track it. collectable cars really bug me especially when their performance orientated. Its like buying a high class escort only to take her to dinner

I agree totally. But the thing is some guys who buy cars like this have literally dozens of cars (this last owner was reported to have 60+ cars). So dunno how you would get time!

On another forum it was suggested the owner had gone under and the lot was being sold out from underneath him. There was a number of low km early Monaro's, a few classic old school Fords plus the other odd collectable car in the same lot.

In fact I love nearly all those cars in that list :woot:
The ZR-1, HK GTS, XC Cobra Hardtop, 56 Chev, Walkinshaw. All some of my favourite cars! What a collection :bravo:
wow, must be his whole collection.
i'd love to track the 427, but not at those prices.
now that HK would be an investment for sure.
Nick, can i buy one of these with my superannuation fund? (happy to put it in a glass case!, lol).

Hmmm ... grey area.
You need to be able to show that your investment strategy considers it a good investment, research of what you expect it to return, examples of others that have increased in value etc. Basically you need to be able to show that it was bought as an investment and not just because "you want one".
There are suggestions that all "collectibles" will be banned from super funds ... may or may not happen though.

I have been trying to track down a DJR ford XE turbo for about 5 years for sale. Rare those buggers. About 32 made I think and never come up for sale. Mind you that says build number 43 so their must be more than 32 around.
The couple I have seen sold go from mid 25 to 30s. Shame I can not give it a shot. Just bad timing.

My guess is the only car in that lot to satisfy the above is the XE. I do not want one, but sure would make a good investment.

Any of the old school Monaro's on that list would be worth a lot more than the XE? Same for the XC Cobra and the Walkinshaw. Surprisingly even the VS GTS-R has had good investment potential with returns not bad before the GFC. I think the XE would be very hard to put forward as an investment. Despite the GFC downturn some of the old school cars are still pulling in very good money, its just not as crazy as before :) I have seen Shannons pop through a few old school Monaros for a pretty penny recently.
I would not like to try and sell that Phase 3 for $750k either right now. The HRT427 pictured above currently holds the highest selling price at over $900k if I recall correctly but as others have said it will be interesting to see what it goes for now!
In my opinion this will all die out with the boomers though.

Yes $920k.
A HOLDEN Monaro has become the most expensive Australian car after selling for $920,000 - to a bloke wearing shorts and thongs.
The HRT 427 was one of two built in 2002 to showcase Holden and HSV's engineering prowess.
The other is in Holden's concept car collection and is not for sale.
It was bought by a Queensland building industry figure who wants only to be known as "Chooka".
Hearing on the grapevine that Sydney car dealer Classic Throttle Shop was selling the car, he arrived last week for a test drive in shorts and thongs, then purchased it.
The vehicle features carbon-fibre fittings, a 417kW 7.0L V8 and race brakes to haul it down from a top speed of 299km/h. It was built to rival Porsche's track-focused 911 GT2.
"I'm a Monaro fanatic," Chooka confided. "I've got 20 of them, from the first ones in 1968 through to the last one in 2006.
"All are in pristine, low-mileage original condition - so I had to have the HRT 427 to add to my collection.
"These don't grow on trees. As far as I'm concerned it's priceless."
Classic Throttle Shop's Chris Bowden described it as a million-dollar car because of its top-shelf specification and rarity.
"He beat us down a bit, but everyone finished up happy with the price," Mr Bowden said.
The previous record was $750,000 for a Ford Falcon 1971 GTHO Phase III, sold last June.

The XE is just a car I would like to have. I used to own one in 1993. I sold it not long after owning as the insurace was silly and it was just too nice to go out with a car load of mate and flog the hell out of it. On appy wages impossible to afford to keep too. I sold it for 8k about the same as I bought it. I then went a bought and XE S pack for 2k, went to MIke vine turbo and put a stage 3 turbo kit on, 9 inch diff and subra 5 speed for about 7k. Same car bacially but fair bit more power. Then I could flog it around without worrying and I sure bloody did.
I said to myslef I will get one as soon as I could afford it but the dam things started to go up in price then they basically stopped going up for sale. Now with kids I can not spend the money like that as yet.

$920,000 is a bit steep'ish!!
I think I'd buy a Gallardo or something if I had that kind'o money...
You could have 3 Gallardo's Aeron... Or a Pair of Murcielago's if you bought MY07 models!!!!
Ludicrous amounts of cash for any holden!

Just to clarify I wasnt disparaging the car. What you describe is obviously similar to what happens with the boomers when they think of the old school cars. Thus the large sums paid for these cars. My only point was with investment you have to ask yourself will enough people in 15-20 years feel the same about the XE to pay huge sums of cash for it? I think with no racing heritage or devoted following the XE would be the lowest "investment" potential on that list, however i still think the car itself is pretty cool :)

No worries at all and investing in one of them would be pointless IMO. It is not even a ford release but from DJR and some mob in Melbourne. I thought I would just tell a story that all. Still I think it will go for about 40k just from all the advertising and being amongst those other cars. One day

Ouch!!
...But...somewhere about what I always thought it was worth..
His purchase at $920k just showed he was off the planet and obviously using something far too strong...;)

And the word is highest bidder was Andrew Bogut, US based Australian basketballer. Presume some post auction negotiation would be going on.

everything at the auction pulled way more than it was worth. HRT 427 passed in at 290k and cant be registered.
The 6cyl hk went for 80k the 8cyl hk went for 78k the gts and gto current types were way over what they were worth
