View Full Version : Stock clutch on its way out? (04 Monaro)
I'm on my 2nd stock clutch now, it's done a few track days but i think it is dying..
When I hit the throttle hard, the clutch becomes really hard to depress (only for a short while)
However, it still works and it doesnt feel like it is slipping really.
Does this sound typically before a clutch dies?
I am wondering if it is something else (a stuffed line, or dodgy fluid)

When I had my stocker, it would slowly engage closer & closer to the floor until I found myself crunching every gearchange due to no available clutch pedal travel. Time for "better" clutch & a braided line.
Clutch? Whats that? Is that like a stall converter :lmao:
Seriously I have had clutches go and they get closerand closer to the floor as what Mitta E described.
I dont think I have ever had one get harder.
Will you go with stock again Dunc or will you finaly beef up that part of the Car :stick:

How good and how much are these "Textralia" clutches that the LS1 boys rave about?? I?ll be up for a clutch in the SS in a few months and im looking at options.

From all reports from around the traps. Tex is best.
JB
I will most likely get a tex as it seems the benchmark clutch.
However i did call Eagle auto parts today, and a GM LS7 clutch is about $550 (AU) including GST
What are the Tex's worth??
Troy :)
Some price here Bomi

but they are in US$
I think you can get one installed for about $1600 or thereabouts

Ive had 4 clutchs in my GTS 2 x stock, exeddy ceramic button type and a Tex which ive had for about 4 months. The tex was about $1700 ish fitted. Its the best of the lot.Quite light considering the punishment it can cop.
Continueing to expect a stock clutch to deal with even moderate driveing let alone a moddified car is unrealistic.Spend the money and get a Tex.

Just a thought.

We have plenty of tex's in stock :)
regards sonny
thanks for the replies.
The GM LS7 clutch was not available - out of stock. I would have liked to try it (at $550 the same price as a regular LS1 clutch) but i'm not pretending it could be as good as a respected aftermarket item. Still, it would have been interesting to see how many track days it held up.
So the Russo Performance guys thought about my requirements (mainly circuit) and where we are going with the car; they have recommended spending a bit extra and go with the Tex Exo-skel. Apparently the exoskel is more suited for circuit.
I'll let you know how it goes

Nice choice Dunc ... the King Shit of clutches by all accounts ... :yep:
Any idea what it is like on the street, any nasty characteristics or is it OK ???

I certainly hope it's good for the street, but like most of these performance products, there's always some degree of compromise. I just don't know yet but will keep you posted.

Cool Duncan. I am definately interested in how you go with it. I don't expect mine to last much longer.
PS - You know how you said it becomes "hard" to depress, mine does that too when it overheats. Turns into a really wierd brass button like depress. Every time I try and heal'n'toe for a lap or two or when I try a few spirited standing starts in a row it does it. Gear changes are becoming harder too.. not long now before RIP.

You blokes might want to check this info over on LS1 before sending the old clutch to the bin. Just some more food for thought.

thanks Phil. Yeah they seem a popular option now. I spoke with Dale on the weekend and I think he has made me one up to go with the tex. Dale if you read this, I think the Russo boys or Peter Haylock will have perhaps ordered it from you, i think.

When giving ones car a right pizzling as Hazza has indicated, does boiling the fluid (which is probably happening) going to make the pedal harder or softer to depress?
Has the clutch ever been flushed Hazza?

Mine doing the same thing unfortunately but only after a hard take off (as hard as the tyres permit anyways) and ditto no slip noted either by feel or logged data.
Those LS7 units - where does one find one. I really wanna retain stock clutch feel and would be keen to try this item
As to the boiling fluid question - dunno - would love to know exactly what causes this phenomena, I know these clutches suck once they have been overheated but as the pedal feel logic would suggest fluid due to hydraulic clutch more evidence of a farked pressure plate dunno, gunna find ut soon me thinks. Wanna help change a clutch??

Tiger. Its interesting as when mine gets hot, it gets very difficult to depress and sort of turns into a brass-button type feel (on or off), still no slip but
very odd feel.
Has been flushed many times.

Sorry to hijcak your thread Duncan but I didn't see the point in starting another and it is related.
All,
Can anyone please tell me what I should expect to pay for the following items and the best place to get them from.
Thanks for the advice on LS7 Clutch Dunc but Eagle do not have any at the moment and are looking into for me, the units they had were off crate motors.
1. Std Replacement clutch kit incl Flywheel
2. Textralia Z-Grip (or the most stock behaved clutch they make I dunno)
3. LS7 clutch kit - This is what I really wanna try but may not be able to it all depends on value for money I guess.
Any other suggestions are welcome
Thanks

Luke,
Here goes,
1- Have the equivilant to a ls7,like stock but more clamping force $900
2- The textralia "X" Grip is the clutch for you, bahves like stock with heaps more clamping force will hold $500hp no problem $1450
-Hope this helps

Sonny,
That's awesome genuinely appreciate the help - the equivalent to the LS7, is that a GM unit or an aftermarket jobbie and forgive my ignorance here but does that include the flywheel or is it likely that that will be fine? Finally, you stock this clutch I take it.
Are you going to the LS1 organised private day next Sun - I may have to have a chat if you're willing.
Thanks

Luke,
Glad to be of help, the kit comes with flywheel /pressure plate & cltuch plate all balanced up,uses a factory flywheel machined and balanced and the rest of the bits from diff area's :),basically it is equivilant to the ls7 one as i said ,but little stronger.i will be at the private day,ur more then welcome to have a chat :) ,i have only one left in stock of this unit, though a cars booked in to have it fitted though i have ordered more :)

The Russo Speed Shop ordered the exo-skel and it has arrived!
(Russo are just up the road from Tex headquarters)

I'm told this clutch looks the goods! But I wouldnt know a clutch from my clacker. Anyway it's a twin plate design that is apparently suited to circuit and big HP; should be good for the impending engine build..:) :) :)
Thanks Pete (Plan B) and Russo Performance. Hopefully i'll get to bed it in before next Sunday....

But I wouldnt know a clutch from my clacker.
You've got a twin plate clacker???
The Russo Boys dropped of the car with the exo-skel fitted this arvo, so i took it for a spin to see what its like (for the street anyway)... The clutch take-up point is low versus a stocker, it has some minor shudder (and i do mean minor) which i'm told will dissipate. The pedal is firmer than stock, but not too much.. overall the drivability is about 70~80% as good as a stocker.
So if this clutch can take the punishment they say it can, I am a very happy camper thus far... question is, can this clutch survive my co-driver on Sunday? And soon thereafter another 100 ponies or so...
Thanks again Team Russo for the excellent service, much appreciated guys.

Nice choice Dunc.
Sonny installed a Tex in my thing on the Friday before the last private day I went to. I did about 120k's stop start before giving it a good workout at the strip. These things are as tough as nails, so don't have any fear about getting stuck into it on Sunday.
Cheers,

Got no idea Erik. When I had it installed, there wasn't a choice of different types like there is now. Sonny can answer that one though.
