If the title makes sense to you, have you ever had to use the CustData telstra website to set up your name servers? We've just had a new fibre connection provisioned and i want to host my website using an SBS2008 server internally. I've had an IT infrastructure pro set up the server etc. but i just want to get the delegation/propogation underway. Normally (for a virtual host situation) i would just set the nameservers pointing to the hosting co. nameservers, but i am not sure how it's done when you host the box yourself using telstra direct (fibre). I can get to the box using IP ok at this stage.

Anyone done it?

Unsure on your question Duncan.. but nice job getting fibre mate!
What sort of upload bandwidth can you expect?

If you don't mind me asking, what sort of ongoing cost is associated with telstra fibre? Plans and such..

To answer my own question, in order to switch from a virtual host arrangement to an internally hosted one (assuming telstra and the custdata online tool) this is what you do:

a. Under primary DNS add a new record: eg. yourdomain.com
b. Then "Update" the record, then select option 4
c. Add an "A" record type for www.yourdomain.com (use the WAN IP address that telstra gave you)

d.Now, still under Primary DNS section, select option 2 "Assign IP address for domain" and enter the same WAN IP address here (this will enable you to omit the "www" when people enter your domain name).

e. Now go to your domain registrar and change the name servers to ns0.telstra.net and ns1.telstra.net

It should now work (after propogation).

There is more work to get the mail servers working however, i can detail that if anyone is interested (pm me). There really should be a simple guide which outlines these simple steps, the instructions on the tls website are unclear. I am sure there would be a more complete geek version of how this should be done (and i dont care) but this is what telstra told me after several "layers" of support.

it's all working whoohoo!

It's a pretty big deal installing fibre (at least it was for me) which involved laying fibre 190m up the street and up 10+ stories into my building. It's taken eight weeks and untold layers of telstra people, it's been a major hassle.

We just went with a 6Mb link, so sustained link of 4Mb ~ 5mb download and 3Mb ro 4Mb upload or thereabouts; however the real reason to get fibre is the SLA and "dedicated" connection. We can grow to a much larger pipe easily too (so i am told) - ADSL and/or cable could give us faster speeds than this but not the other benefits we need for business. We will be using ADSL2 for a redundant link (which i think will be quicker than the 6Meg fibre straight up). Anyway i think the monthly fee is $500 to $1000 a month or thereabouts.

Make sure you change your MX records if you host mail as well..... otherwise, here no email!!!

make sure ur lowest record is the main mail server
