Tough Weekend for Alan East Motorsport
Media Release
Sunday, 18 July, 2010
Current Australian GT Championship leader David Wall and the rest of the Alan East Motorsport team have had a difficult weekend at the Dial Before You Dig Australian Six Hour at Eastern Creek Raceway coming home in 8th place.
Due to work commitments, David and the team were unable to take part in the Friday practice sessions but made an impact in the first practice session on Saturday setting the second fastest time.
David qualified in 3rd in the first qualifying session, but the team chose to sit out the second session to work on the car.
There was a slight imbalance in the car which we wanted to work on before the warm up session first thing on Sunday morning, said David on Saturday afternoon.
We were pleased with how things had gone in the first qualifying session, but wanted to make sure we had the best possible car for the race on Sunday.
The team qualified in 3rd place, 1.3140 seconds behind the Team Mitsubishi Ralliart Evo X.
Thanks to the work the team carried out after the first qualifying session, the team were able to close the gap to just 0.1928 of a second in the Sunday morning warm up session.
Starting the race, David started solidly sitting in 3rd place early on before working his way into 2nd place after four laps just behind the Ralliart Evo X.
The team were battling with front right tyre wear so were pacing themselves, maintaining a comfortable gap between the car in front and behind through much of the first part of the race.
At about the half way mark when Davids father Des was double stinting in the car, disaster struck and the hub of the right front broke forcing Des to limp back to the pits.
The team worked hard to repair the car but when they returned to the track they were 9 laps down on the leader and in 12th place.
They pushed hard to make up one lap and work their way into 8th place at the end of the six hour race.
The changes we made to the car overnight significantly improved the handling of the car and I was really pleased with how it responded in the warm up, David said this afternoon.
We knew we were going to have to look after our front right tyre during the six hour race so we took it easy early on. Unfortunately, when the hub failed we dropped too much time to fight for a podium finish.
I am really disappointed to not be able to show what we could do today. I really think we could have finished on the podium, but I think it says a lot about the determination of my team that we did not give up when we fell 9 laps behind.
We returned to the track and fought as hard as we could to work our way back to 8th place.
David now has just over two weeks to prepare for his next endurance race in Malaysia, at Sepangs 12-hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race. There he will compete in a Mosler for the first time and joining him will be Andrew MacPherson and Mike Reedy.
David Wall is racing this year thanks to the continued support of Wilson Security, Payce, Shannons and Mount Aqua.
To catch all the action from this race on SBS, next Sunday 25th July on Speedweek at 1pm. Highlights from the Australian GT race from last weekend at Phillip Island will be on OneHD next Sunday also, just before the F1 race coverage at 8:30pm.
