View Full Version : Power steering, Auto trans cooler install
Whilst NickS was getting his turbo put in, his AT cooler had to come off and could not be put back on due to size restriction, so I made him an offer and took it off his hands. Then whilst at Repco here in Wagga I saw a PWR AT cooler that was a good price, so I bought that and fitted it as the PS cooler.
Put it all in myself and got the fittings from Pyrtec Wagga.

As the AT cooler has a large fan so Im not to worried about placing the PS cooler infront of it or the fact that 90% of both are behind the bumper strut.

I couldnt believe how easy the front bumper comes off, 9 or ten screws in total. A 10 minute if that, job.
Next I took the front bumper bar strut off. That to comes of really easy, 6 bolts. Taking this of gave me great access to the front of the radiator where I mounted the coolers.
I had to cut the standard cooler brackets, then bend them to get them to hold the new coolers in place.
Troy :D
Well I wasnt happy with the way I mounted the coolers so I went to the Bunning speed shop LOL and founf it the builders section a good way to mount the coolers. They cost $1.90 each and were solid enough to mount the coolers but soft enough for me to bend them the way I wanted by hand.

When it came time to hook the AT cooler up I called Pirtek Wagga and got some hose joiners from them. They helped to make joining the cooler to the AT very easy.
Just cut the top hose which is the return (to AT) hose the get the cooler hose and place it on the joner. Secure with a hose clamp to be sure. Repeat the process with the bottom AT hose. See pic below.

All in all it was a easy install. I saved some money by installing it myself plus it was fun to be able to do something mechanical with my car.

Very nice Bombi i knew you would get round to installing it one day, great job !!!! just a note bombi, auto trans coolers cant be solidly mounted as they are like a radiator and must have "cushioning" ,i suggest you add a coupe of old shock rubbers as suspension for the unit, otherwise in time the tanks and welds will split :)
regards sonny
Hey Sonny!
Cheers for that, I have some little rubber grommet bush type mounts in my tool box, Ill pt them on this weekend.
Thanks again,
Troy :)

lol i installed a 10" thermo behind the trans cooler, with a by pass switch for it and the a/c thermo fan.
got an electric water pump going in when i do my cam, so i can run them both to cool car until thermostat shuts (but its a drilled thermo, so it will pump some water too).
the p/s cooler is a stock vx cooler, tow pack. will be getting rid of it in favour of an ASE one, as i will need space for an engine oil cooler and w2a intercooler, LOL.
my favourite is the braided line. the intank rad cooler is also there to provide a lower buffer to the oil (shouldnt run too cool oil...)

Lad's I changed my VY SS auto to a seperate cooler (no fan) instead of running it through the radiator.
My question is where and how can i install a temp gauge for auto oil and what temp ranges am I looking at? Ie: Min and max temps to monitor.
What type of gauge?
Cheers
