I need to remove the SS badges from the each side of the car as they have seen better days and I have some new ones to replace them.
Whats the safest way of removing them with out damaging the paint and getting rid of any sticky residue left behind?

Seedy covers something similar here ----> http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=41541

Hopefully the SS badge is somewhat easier than that, but it gives you an idea of how well they might be stuck on, especially after several years.

Good luck ...

Azza, just use an old credit card or something similar without sharp edges to get under the edge of the badge to lift it to get it started. Once you've done this it should peel off with a little encouragement.

Re: sticky residue, the best thing I have found is apply eucalyptus oil to the adhesive that is left behind and then it will (with some rubbing & work) eventually come off relatively easily.

As an added bonus your car will smell like a cough drop. :yahoo:

OMG! He's using a chisel and a sharp knife WTF?

I've heard of using the fishing line method and was going to tackle it with that (tackle....now there's a pun :lmao:).
Has anyone else have a method that doesn't require me to see a carpenter to remove a couple of badges from my car?

You can also try heating the badge with a hair dryer, this will soften the glue and will have less chance of having the paint come off with the badge, it has worked for me for over 20 years, don't forget to repolish the area if you don't put any badges back, as the metho or uecalyptus oil could remove some of the top gloss from your paint. plus don't forget Dave's credit card, thanks Dave never thought of that one...

lol, yeah ... pretty dodgy. The 'name' badges were fine - in my instance 'calais'. They were just double sided tape, it was just the side strips which were a prick.

So tell us ... are you going gold bling badges? :p

Ah you saw them on eBay too:)

Sorry mate just got the ordinary chrome badges, the clear plastic film has come off and the chrome is starting to lift and tarnish with the current ones.:werd:

I know this is an old thread but this is the process i use.

1. wash the area This lessens the chances of swirls and scratches being put in the paint if you rub things over it.

2. Heat the badges with a heat gun or hairdryer

3. Slide some fishing line behind them and try and keep it touching the badge rather than the paint

4. once the badge is off you have a few options to remove the residual adhesive
-Stoners Xenit- a citrus cleaner, its magic stuff!!
-Eucaluptus oil
-Clay
I usually use Xenit then follow up with clay

5. Give the area a polish or if you dont have polish a use a paint cleaner/cleanser

6. Wax the area so its protected
