Hi guys,
trying to decide my next mod. I have VYII SS M6 ute, usual mods:
headers
cats
twin 2 1/2"
K & N CAI
MAF Tune
238RWKW.
its mainly street driven (most of that highway), also does track work. i'm planning on doing both cam and diff gears eventualy, but i'm after an opinion from those that have done it, is it better to do one before the other?
Cheers,
John

John,
If cost is an issue, then DG first. You can get 3.91 fitted for approx $990 at Langs differentials and around $1500-ish elsewhere ... whereas CAM you're looking at $3500 ish drive in - drive out depending on workshop.
I found DG did improve my cars pick up quite a bit and made things a little kinder on the clutch.
CAM was also good as an upgrade but if BFYB is what you seek I would say Diff Gears.
Cheers Dave
If you are doing circuit the DG's would be good for that extra punch out of corners, perhaps moreso than just gobs of more grunt

Did you have the cam before diff gears?
On my stock VY SS i had exhaust and diff gears done together.I was very
impressed with the extra go.

John, I'd go cam first... more pricey, but definitely worth it.

Thanks for the advice guys, it is a cost thing, but i can fit the cam myself so that should save some money!

Havent done either, but I did drive the SS models back to back, one with std 3.46 gears and the other with 3.7's. (the later model 5.7L VZ). The diff gears definitely get the engine into it's torque band a lot earlier making it a lot more punchy and useable. I imagine a cam would give you a bigger shove than gears alone, but off the mark the dg's win hands down for a bang for your buck mod. When the cam goes in later, you will have the best of both worlds :D

Well I know on my SS i'll be doing diff gears before Cam. No question.

yes i did the cam first, only got the diff done due to a lsd turning 1 wheel at the strip on 2 runs , so i bit the bullet and threw a set of 3.9s in. overall fuel econ was worse (as expected more revs = more fuel) and the gain was 1/10th and about 1 mph. so bang for buck is 1200 for dg is 1 tenth, or cam gave me 4 tenths for 3g.
