Did a supersprint at EC on Saturday, in atrocious weather.

Scary, but a really good learning experience in car balance and throttle control. Very scary at times but I managed to keep it on the track and nab 2nd place outright out of 87 starters… 1st place was an ex v8 supercar driver in a 600hp WRX! I had no chance! My car isn't setup for the wet, i've got 700lb springs in the front and 800lb on the rear plus i didn't play with any toe settings or even my swaybars, maybe i'll get inspired next time to mess around with it!

But stoked with the 2nd place in such appalling conditions.

Video footage: shocking conditions!

Final Session, heavy rain through most of this session, it gets pretty difficult to see near the end:

Session 3, i have a half spin at T3 on lap 3 :o and then chase down Greg Boyle in his wide body Nissan Silvia with 350kw

^ A050's Dunc, they weren't all that great as they were down to the wear indicators but luckily there wasn't too much standing water on the fast bits. I was concentrating on being very gentle with the throttle and steering inputs but it was as slippery as hell!

^ Yeah it sure is fat!! Has zero offet rims and 315 front 285 rear rubber!! Doesn't look much like a Silvia anymore ha ha... I spent a fair part of the day behind him watching him get out of shape on just about every corner, looked very well balanced, really wide and low.

We traded places all day and swaped to chase and lead to see if we could get one up on each other... he led by a tenth for the first few sesions and i managed to just pip him by a tenth in the end. Pretty evenly matched in the wet, in the dry i reckon with him having 350kwatw i'd struggle to keep up given i have nearly 100kw less!

I'll be up against him again this coming Friday in irace Muscle division, looks like being wet again, giddy up!

wow, didnt look too bad from the in-car. The car in front seems to be skating a bit in comparison.

Must admit i am a little worried about racing in the wet, threat of damage etc...

Then again I haven't had a dry track day since irace last October 2010!! Seems every time in the last 6 months i've taken the car out it's bloody rained, at least i've got some decent wet track experience now!

Secretly i tend to think if it does rain then i'll have a good chance at a podium considering how good the evo is in the wet and especially off the line in the wet but nonetheless it is quite daunting considering it will be my 2nd ever door to door race.

I'm committed now rain hail or shine so i guess we'll see! See you guys there.

I should give iRace a go at some stage - I just need a 3 layer suit - anyone got one for sale?

ShylanMotorsport

You dont a triple layer suit to run irace.... What suit do you have?

evil_weevil
29-04-2011, 11:50 AM
I have a single layer with the nomex fireproof underwear which MRA allow me to have, so iRace "could" let me race with that too?

hope so - I'll give the muscle div a go and sit at the back :D

actually - looking at some times (could have been wet at some stage?)
seems a few good mix of cars of all different times - good!!

^ ha ha yeah qualifying was dry but every race was wet! Definitely mixed things up a bit. I have some vids that i'll post up soon. Very challenging conditiions with drying track, wet track, rain, sprinkling, Races 1 and 2 for muscle/touring were called wet coz it pissed down 10 mins before we were due out!

Ask Stu about it, he'll tell you how much he loved the conditions lol :)

yeah was going to say stu doing 1.37 in dry and then low 40's - stupid mother nature has made it rain for like almost 3 weeks :(
you'd be used to the rain at EC Michael!

so with iRace, there is 2 more rounds at EC this year yes?

might do them!

Yeah round 5 19th August and Round 6 23rd September at EC.

The low 1.40's in wet were on slicks, my wets were just absolutely useless, but had to use em because some **** declared wet track

We were still sorting this issue for last race hence us and 5 others starting from pit lane - was not happy.

Raised a few other issues - and an improved plan if the same conditions prevail again - does make it difficult to run an event in wet conditions and so many different classes / drivers etc.

But all in all I think most were - who were there, happy with the day.

New wets are out for me at the moment, concentrating on minor issues - like gear boxes, shock rebuilds, brakes, should have R33 rebuild completed soon, didn't I miss it - and some, in the wet.

I actually enjoy wet conditions as it is a great equaliser - but you need half a tyre, not some out of date flower pots like I had.

Cheers

Yeah i've had a bit of wet weather experience recently, actually every event i've done on the last 6 months has been wet at some stage!

Whilst the evo was fantastic off the mark i too was let down by old shagged tyres, was using a set of A050's i've been using since Superlap last year that have done over 6 events since - including irace last October! I've been resisting buying a new set due to $$ and the fact i'm running slicks nowadays but i think i have to bite the bullet as it's getting a little dangerous using them in the wet. But you watch, it will be dry for every event for the rest of the year if i do!!

I hate wet spins! Feel like I'm suddenly a passenger! P.S. I tried to check out your build page but the link said the page is missing? Have you taken it down?

Cheers,
