Well this isnt "funny" exactly.. but...

look what happens when a bunch of guys are looking out of the window (probably IRAQ) and a sniper tries to take them down..

That was scary - not even time to blink!!! I read about snipers in Iraq, they are a serious problem. They know precisely where the weak points on the US Marine's armour are and hit em nearly every time - very very scary place to be. And I dont think the aussie SAS are issued with body armour.....

Trust me, they do. The ADF has really got off its arse in the last 7 years in relation to Ballistic protection for its people. New helmets and new ballistic vests.

OK, Individual Protective Equipment or IPP for short consists of a number of different things.

Lets start at the head.

Members of the ADF use a new lightweight kevlar helmet. They are not bullet proof but will stop artillery and morter fragments. In the case of a bullet it will slow the bullet but it will still enter the Helmet.

Your neck would probably sustain some pretty bad whip lash if not worse do to a projectile hitting the helmet at 600 plus meters per second.

Next is the "Bullet proof vest".

Made up of a cover that is in the shape of a vest, a ballist resistant liner is able to be fitted. This liner is made from a material called Aramid. This fiber on its on can stop Morter and Shell fragments but not bullets or even knives. They also have a high collar to help protect the throat and Carotid arteries on either sid eof the neck.

On the front and rear of of the vest are large sleeves that allow Ceremic ballistic plates to be fitted to the front and rear of the vest. These suckers are the Bullet proof part of the vest. These plates can withstand mulitple hits from high velocity rounds. I have seen them take 5 plus hits at close range and they stopped every round

So there you go Alex. Some things to google if you are still interseted are "Kevlar" "Aramid".

In the pic below you can see the vest with the front sleeve for the Plate and the helmet, even though the guy isnt wearing it properly. It should be down near his eye brows for maximum skull coverage.

I'm actually ex army but I have been out for double the seven years BOMI was talking about. Cant remember where I read it - my wife works with magazine publishers and brings home the odd mag or 2 that she thinks might interest me - mostly car stuff though.

Good info Troy, pics tell a thousand words. When I was in the army, we had none of that stuff - back in '89 -90.
