AIM To install a fire extinguisher for use at the track and every day driving. :flame:

TOOLS
*You
*Phillips Head Screw Driver
*Drill and associated drill bit to fit your screws
*Self tapping sunken screws
*Velco Strips
*Fire extinguisher (From Supercheap Auto between $20-35)
*Red marker
*Mineral Turps

Steps
1. The first thing you need to do is to find out where you want to put your fire extinguisher - I decided to put mine on the drivers door map pocket as it is a 'snug' fit and helps prevent the thing flying out going around a corner! Make sure you spend a bit of time trying to find the best spot for it, the worst thing you could do is drill into a panel and realise it wont fit!

2. Get the velcro and put the fuzzy side on the fire extinguisher and the rough side on the mounting bracket supplied with the extinguisher (Do the second part after you have screwed the bracket on!)

3. Mark where the two screws will go in on the panel with the marker. Now drill through the panel with the right drill bit and put the mounting bracket on and screw it in - remove any excess marker with Turps/cloth. The reason why sunken screws are good is because they will remain flush with the plastic bracket and not poke out.

4. Put the fire extinguisher in and there you have it! Peice of cake and the damage is less than $40! You never know it might come in handy one day! :D

Awesome work mate, top writeup.

You're right too - it definitely pays to have one in the car. Whether you hit the track weekly, or drive to the shops once a fortnight...it's better to be safe than sorry. I can think of two members on this forum alone who have had small fire incidents in the past.

(For those thinking "Yeah, but how often do you see a car on fire?" I've seen at least 3 over the years. Sure a small fire extinguisher won't put out car that's engulfed in flames, but it may well stop it from getting to that stage.)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Fantastic idea, all cars should have them, even your house. I know, our house caught fire !!

It's compulsory to carry a fire extinguisher on a power boat (and in the case of one as big as mine, you have to carry at least two). I bought my last extinguisher (for the car) from Biass Boating Warehouse (they've outlets all over the place). It comes with a metal mounting bracket with an 'over centre' type snap lock to hold the extinguisher in place. A much better option for mounting in a car where you def don't want an extinguisher to get loose in an accident or similar.

Lets put it this way, not something I need to see on a Sunday afternoon again.....

This was a real thing, scared the shit out of me, only trained 2 weeks prior in extingusher use, it paid off !!

When a kid runs out and says my room is on fire.....

And you run in and hit a wall of smoke...

Fark, have as many fire fighting things as you can have.

Also note:

7 calls to 000, there was that much smoke !

Scarey shit, this was my wake up call.

It comes with a metal mounting bracket with an 'over centre' type snap lock to hold the extinguisher in place.

I've got the same one Allan - you can get them from BigW and SuperCheap from $20-$25 for the small ones (though sometimes they have the plastic brackets, so you have to check beforehand).

But yes..quite solid those metal brackets. :)

Cheers,
