We have had quite a few VE'S thru the shop now, what was interesting today was we had our first omega in for its first service,as all the previous ones were v8's,what i found interested was GM went back to the 4l60E from the french box they have in the vz's behind the V6's(terrible thing they are),another interesting point was the diff ratio,in the SS is "2.92" in this omega they had "3.27" ,I would have thought, they would have had the 3.27 or perhaps 3.45 in the SS ? though the 6litre calais has 3.45 like the hsv range which also has 3.7's.

Sonny,

I'll stand corrected on this, but I think you'll find the low spec v6 is offered with the 4 speed auto, as it was in the VZ, the high spec v6 is offered with the 5 speed auto.

And for all you train spotters, single exhaust pipe = low spec, dual exhaust = high spec v6 and we all know what quad pipes =

Cheers,

Jarrod

the different diff ratios between the cars is probably due to the different gearboxs and the ratios they have in them. with a 3.45 in the ss could be reving in nuts off with that gearbox.

all i was getting at was oem they would have used what they believe the best ratio for the average driver to get the best consumption etc from the new box. they wouldn't just wack a taller one in for the heck of it so everyone would want to change it.

6 speed auto must have a faily quick 1st gear in that not be in it long, so 3.45 would make that even a shorter time. maybe it is fantastic for performance ppl, i don't know never driven one with them.

4 or 5 speed auto ratios would be different, so wouldn't need the same oem diff as a 6 speed, for a oem car. i'd say a 3.73 maybe 3.91 in the old 4 speed would be like a 3.45 in a new 6 speed?

I gree with you there 100%,GM have to tune and talor their vehicle to suit 50000 diff ppl,so they must find a meduim, though wen you do diff ratio you must rescale the atuo, its not too bad,but put it this way i wouldnt go any further then 3.45 on a auto ve

Interesting. I originally went to 3.45 with my A4 and it wasn't worth the exercise so I ended up with 3.91s which is a far better deal. But then you need that with the relatively tall 1st in the A4.

The ford A6 has a very low 1st gear ( diff ratio 2.73 I think), my mate put 3.23's in his BF xr8 and it was awsome off the mark did a 12.85@109 1.91 60ft with tune, gears, hedders (std cats back), cai and with driver 1960kg.

Hate to think what the 6ltr A6 would do with similar mods.
