View Full Version : How To:-piggy Back Speakers
I recently put some Pioneer 6x9's in the SS.
Dave asked me the other day how I connected the Rears to the head unit.
The way I did it was by Piggy backing them onto the rear door speakers.
Sooooo...
HOW TO PIGGY BACK PARCEL SHELF SPEAKERS TO REAR DOOR SPEAKERS
Firstly remove your rear door trims.
To do this you need to do a few things. Remove the 6 screws that run around the bottom and sides of the door trim.

Then take the lock button out.

Now you need to remove the door handle.

Now unsrew the barcket that supports the door handle area and the door facia come off. NOTE:- Power window power cable still attached.
To unplug the cable, get a flat blade screw driver and press the tab which conveniently against the facia out of the way

i should wait until your finished really because i don't know whats next.
but i did a jumpered setup for a while, worked ok but it is extra load on that circut doing that. and at the time i could really hear much difference between the door speakers and parcel shelf, and just the parcel shelf but i did leave with both for a couple of years, until doing some more changes then removed the rear doors out of it.
another way is to just remove the bottom kick panels, cut the rear wires here and run back to the parcel shelf from there or splice in if you want both (can use those plastic things with the press down metal bit in the middle to join the wires also no cutting no taping up needed then). doing it here you don't have to remove the door panels then.
Sorry for the delay, sever problems.
Right, so now the door facia is off.

Here are the Piggy back wires, the grey ones are going to the 6x9's.
Cut off about 15mm of wire insulation and then twirl the wire bewteen your thumb and fore finger, this stops it fraying apart. Now lay this end over the male part of the speaker conection so that its touch both side of the male connecteor, now simply push the femail end onto the mail. Now to make sure you can, if you want, crimp them both together with a pair of pliers to make sure they wont come un done.

Now you need to run the wire back through the rubber boot that hold speaker and power wires. It joins at the "B" pillar.

Now to get the wire to feed through easy I user about 20cm of coat hanger with a tiny little loop put on the end to hold and thread the wire through the boot.

In the photo on the right, you can see the removed "sill" panel, this gives you access to the screws that lets you take it off and in turn lets you take the "B"pillar facia off. Taking the "B" pillar facia off lets you take the grey wire from the rubber "boot" to the cabin and then under the "sill" and up to the boot of the car so you can conect it to your 6x9's
Sorry I didnt have more photos of the above but I ran out of time and light.
As 235RWK stated, there are other ways to do this, you dont have to go to the speaker in the door its self but I chose to for a few reasons. One being I didnt want to splice into a line, two, I wanted to see how to get the door facia off.
Hope this helps some of you.

Bomi,
If you've wired the speakers in parallell (which I'm sure you have), your amp is now seeing a 2 OHM load (assuming your door speakers are also 4 OHM).
You'll blow your amp up as I'd guarantee it's not designed to run a 2 OHm load.
Parawhowho?? Piggy backed? I dunno know.
Im not running an Amp but I guess you could mean the head decks one.
Thanks for the advice Al.
What should I do :yike:
Help

Yep, the head decks amp.... very few amps are happy driving 2 ohm loads. The simple solution is to disconnect the door speakers and just have it driving your new speakers.

Alternatively, if your amp won't drive a 2 ohm load, you can wire the speakers in series.
So, take the - rear speaker wire and connect to the + parcel shelf speaker. Connect the - parcel shelf speaker to the head unit - and the + rear speaker to the head unit +.
Bit confusing, but it should look a bit like this:

Yeah, I know I can't draw for shit, but I hope you get the idea.
Cheers,
Scott
Thanks for that Scat, good lil diagram, I might do that.
