Changing your oil and filter every 10,000 km's is a good way to keep your little motor running it tip top condition! I change both every 5 thousand km's but its up to you.

Some commonly used oil brands are: Shell, Castrol, Penzoil, Mobil 1, Valvoline, Fuchs, Penrite and Halvoline. There are two types of oils: Synthetic and Mineral - out of the two Synthetic oil is the best as it is made in a lab and mineral oil comes from the ground! So there you go!

Aim To change your oil and filter and save yourself some bucks!

Tools
You
Oil and Oil Filter (From any good auto store/Kmart)
Degreaser
Oil filter wrench
Rag
Oil funnel and draining pan
Old bottles to put old oil in
Marker
Correct spanner for cracking sump plug (I used 14mm)
Car jack and stand
Gloves

*Before you go out and get your filter and oil - make sure you get the right one! Oil should be the correct W. If you are not sure what to get ask the salesperson at the store if not your local car dealership/mechanic will tell you if you ask nicely! Also find out how much your oil sump holds :)

Step 1 Start your car up and let it run for around 10 mins. Turn it off and wait another 10 mins - this allows the oil to get warm and drops back into the sump which means you get most of it out. Jack the car up and put the stand in the right spot making sure you have enough room to get underneath the car. It might also be and idea to put a old wheel or tyre under the chassis just incase the stand fails.

Step 2 Put on your gloves and crack the sump plug nut with your spanner and unscrew it with your hand. Now watch as all the black gold pours out! Give the plug a good clean with the rag and put it in a clean spot. Let all the oil run out until there is about 1 drop per 30 seconds. Put the nut back in and tighten with the spanner. Drop the car back down to earth and get cracking on that oil filter!

Step 3 Now is a good time to find out were your oil filter and filler cap is. Its easy on my car as seen in this pic.

Unscrew the oil filler cap and stick your oil funnel in there. Now unscrew the oil filter with your filter wrench - a little bit of oil will come out so dont freak out! Spray the area with degreaser and wash it off. Chuck the old filter out.

Step 4 Get the new oil filter and pour some new oil into the new containers cap. Apply a liberal amount to the new filter plastic ring as shown in the photo with your finger.

Now with the new filter put it back into its spot turning it hand tight. Get your new oil and calculate how much you have to put in (With my car i have a 3.8 L dry sump. So the 5L bottle minus 3.8L for the dry sump equals 1.2L remaining in the bottle so mark where 1.2L on the bottle is so you know when to stop pouring!)

Step 5 With the filter in the fill cap start to pour your new oil in, checking every so often how much you have to go. Once that is done, screw the cap back on, check to see if the oil fitler is screwed in enough. Go and start your car and let it run for a few minutes. Check the dip stick to see if there is enough oil in there and if not top up until it says its full also look to see if the filter is leaking, if so tighten it up with your filter wrench.

Put all your tools away and pour the old oil into your old coke/juice bottles and take it to your local tip where they will process it for a small fee. Degrease the oil pan and funnel and there you go! Saved yourself some money and now you can spend that extra cash on other things!

Nice write up Hethro. Hope you dont mind if I pop a few tips in too. I always loosen the filler cap on top of the engine first - allows the oil to run out a little easier, when you undo the sump plug. Another tip - if you cant get to your filter easily with the proper tool (filter removal tool), or it is too tight, grab a phillips head screwdriver and hammer. Ensure your waste oil tray is underneath the filter. Tap the screwdriver through the oil filter at the lowest point possible (to avoid damaging the thread that the filter screws onto). When the tip comes through the other side of the filter, use it as a lever to undo the filter. :)

ok to do it really well... drive home, let it cool some, pull the sump plug and leave it to drain all night,

that gets it all out.....mine always takes more if done this way... but i don't always do that.
