Well had a great time at wakefield on Saturday, the field was dominated by sporty little ricers, with civics, mx-5s, imprezas and evos being the main order of the day. Sadly my driving didn't do the clubsport justice at all, but even so, the brute force of the clubby was not enough to overcome the superiour handling of the japanese cars in the bends, which meant I was about 20 seconds of the lead car. My best time was 1:29:39 :sucks:

You can see all the pictures here:

I'd be interested to ask WP veterans, is it common for people to overtake you on the bends, despite being asked not to in the safety briefing?

Will be uploading some vids to Youtube soon also. I spun out braking for turn 2 at 160kph which looks pretty good on camera from the inside (made me feel dizzy watching it). Fortunately no damage done

I saw one other holden, a commodore SS with a track chat sticker on, but it didn't stay long enough for me to say hello. Guess it was someone on here?

If I get waved through, yes. If I know that the other car has definitely spotted me & it is safe to go through, yes. Though generally if I do not know the other car/driver, I wait until it is straight. Not worth rubbing panels, or worse. Note, I am referring more to approaching a corner, under brakes. On open days, the officials are watching, so if they deem someone is driving "unsafely", they get pulled in & chewed out, but nicely ;).

And some nice pics too :).

Great work Alastair ... as long as you had fun, that's all that really matters.

My guess is it won't take long to get down to around the 1:15 - 1:18 mark, most can run that sort of time fairly consistantly when they are used to the car completely and have done a few days. Good excuse to head down again and get some practice.

The other TrackChatter was Stav

Btw, what was the format of the day?

Split into 4 groups based on pace/experience, 15 minute sessions so one session per hour, alternating between timed and non timed (timed = no passengers). I thought that worked out pretty well in the end.

I had a great time but I probably spent too much of it worrying about busting the car, since its jointly owned with my gf and we rely on it heavily, that probably detracted from the enjoyment a tad. But I'll probably give it a try again once I've done the brakes and exhaust.

Sounds like fun, and good on you for having a go. Good pics btw. I can't wait until we all get to Wakefield again.

Good on you for having a go. Went looking for the results (http://www.trackchat.com.au/forum/search.php?searchid=20196) to see what the 350Z in your photo's was doing. It's a shame you couldn't have gone for a ride in Stav's car as he was a fair bit quicker and it may have helped you get a feeling for the lines/speeds etc. Also how come you only did 1 session?

How quick was that Evo XIII!! 1:08!! Wow.. do you know if it was stock?

Good pics mate and I really liked your website you have in your signature

Mate you will love the next WP day, there will be more similar timed people there and you will learn alot. I found that a fast lap with Lautray helped as I new what lines were the go and what were'nt.

Catch out there soon.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments. Unfortunately Stav wasn't around for very long so didn't get a chance, but it would be awesome to get a drive around in another members car.

That EVO was a race car, it arrived on the trailor and was plastered in adverts etc, it was a hardcore bit of engineering for sure. I was glad to be kept away from them hehe.

Only had one session timed because believe it or not wakefield cocked up the timing on my first session. And I didn't bother racing in the 3rd session as I came with a passenger and we were ready to call it a day by then.

Having some trouble with the video. Its from a sony DCR-SR90 and sony puts digital protection on the mpegs, and I have to rotate the video too, so its taking a while but should be done soon. The spin does at least look pretty cool hehe.

Good to see you out there having a go. Most people will never get their car on the track, so you're a step ahead of them.

I agree with what everyone else has said. Get someone in the car with you that knows their way around Wakefield, and you will absolutely smash your time to bits, learn heaps, and have even more fun!

Just be careful... this stuff is addictive!!

Hi Guys,

Alastair, I heard a couple other track chat members were going down. I had to run after lunch though to get back to Sydney. It was so hot and I went pretty hard in my boat (well at least it felt like a boat after going out in the Evo VI for a few flying laps.) Ended up cutting all my sessions short by 3-5 laps due to over heating.

I ended up with a mid 1:16 which I was pretty happy with. With stock suspension, you can't go to hard around wakefield (Troy, drifting the turn onto the straight was great fun.... where were you :whip: ).

The EVO is a former production class front runner. The pro driver that owned it ran a 1:04 qualifying time around Wakefield and a 1:06 race time. The current owner who is one of my mates, ran 1:08s all day in that heat. He can drive, thats for sure (and I'd hope so, he has a Lambo LP640 and F430 in his garage). Another mate of ours had the Datsun 1600 (Group 3D U2L car). First day he took it out and he unfortunately had gear box issues. Still managed to do a 1:12 (third fastest for the day). That has an SR20, no boost (as he proudly displays all over the car). His advantage... car weighs about 700kg and is as stiff as... well I'll let you fill in the gaps here :) .

As an idication of lap times, the F430 at full flight, in street trim, does Wakefiled in 1:12. Eric and Duncan (and those that I haven't been down there with but run 1:11 and 1:10s), you have some wicked machines.

Anyway, the day was good. The format worked out well except the 15 minute sessions, a little too short. Good bunch of guys. They are part of a group called circuit club and have some hard core racers (like the 1:09 minute civic).

Anyway, there is a brief update from Stavs eyes. No Video or photos this time around.

So that's a 3J U2L Improved production car? Sounds about right... I'm currently doing 12s in my car, which is also an IPRA car, but weighs in at about 1000kg. Need to get rid of some weight to chase those Dattos. Not to mention those Civics. Raced against a guy in an identical Civic a couple of weeks ago - he was doing 49s at EC. Sensational stuff!

Hi Mate,

The Datsun is actually in 3D U2L sports sedans. I'm currently on the lookout for a car in this class also. There are 2 at the moment but both are Rotaries. Not sure if I want to go that way although one of them was 3rd in 2004 state and national championships and 2nd in the 2005 state and nationals :bravo: .

Temping!!! Very Temping!!!

Very nice. When I was looking at buying a race car, I thought briefly about sports sedans, but decided to go improved production, simply because there were more cars available, and the overall costs are lower.

Update!

I've now uploaded a vid of my spin off at wakefield between turn 1 and 2. You can check it out here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgZbwO5rC74

Basically a combination of hitting the brakes too hard and turning in at high speed put the back out and sent me off at high speed, fortunately no damage to the car and ended up on the dirt out of harms way. Great fun!

Ahh, yes. The dreaded "kink". That really unsettles my car too. Stock suspension doesn't help. Funny how you can see some cars really attack it whilst others have to tip-toe through. I'm one of the latter :headbang: .

I can't believe how green Wakefield is now    . Since we started going in Dec '05, the landscape has varied between two colours.... yellow or brown.

Alastair, good vid mate  Where was the camera mounted, was a bit wobly  Check out THIS (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=017&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&viewitem=&item=270098482991&rd=1&rd=1) mount I make.

Good ol turn 1, well I think its called turn 1, DONT BRAKE TILL YOU ARE OUT OF IT had many many hairy moments there mate. There is enough room, just, to brake very hard and go down a gear before the turn up onto the back of the circuit.

I loved the slow mo footage as you didnt mute the sound from it and you and your mate sounded funny as fark :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

Look forward to catching up at a circuit day real soon.

Troy :)
