Since this is the Track forum, i thought i would ask you guys and girls opinions :)

I have a chance of buying some second hand Toyo R spec tyres in 17inch (with rims). Just wanting some opinions on this brand of R Spec tyre, and whether they will be worth getting. Im looking at doing the odd track day at Wanneroo (perth) circuit and using them on skid pan days and sometimes on the street.

Any other opinions on different R Spec tyres would be appreciated to. Ive also heard good things about federals.

Dan, Toyo semi-comps are apparently quite good. I think they have 3 types of R-Spec (semi comp)? I have used the Toyo RA-1 once at Eastern Creek (circuit) & they were not bad. Bridgestone RE55 in SR compound (for circuit work) are awesome. Leave most for dead. Also tried Yokohama Advan A048's (although they were partially used when I started with them). They also could not match the RE55's outright grip. Perhaps if they were new it would have been a more even contest between the two. Have seen many cars at Wakefield sport the A048's. Also tried Falken RT215 semi comps. Again, nowhere near as good as RE55, but they definitely provided more grip than a normal street tyre.

If its a good price, I'd buy the Toyo's & see how they go. But eventually, get some RE55's.

Hope this helps :) .

Probably a stupid question, I know, but hey, if I dont ask, I'll never know. RE55 are Bridgestones right? Are they road legal or not? (never actually heard of 'em to tell the truth - have heard of the Toyo's and Yokies though...)

Anyone used Dunlop D01J? The porsche guys reckon these are much better then RE55 but I dont know if they come in 18s.

As above, yes, they are Bridgestone. Pretty sure they're street legal. But you don't see them advertised generally as they're marketed as a motorsport tyre & only available from select Bridgestone Motorsport outlets.

OK time for first post on here; g'day Bomi and co! ;)

I used the D01Js - there are a few compounds. I had the soft ones. On a VTII Commodore, they sucked as they over-heated too quickly; I would get one warm up lap, one decent lap then they would over-heat and go off on most circuits. Turn 1 at Eastern Creek used to melt the outer edge of the front right tyre and it would start delaminatiting when I went through turn 2!!

The harder compound might have been better, but I went to the RE55 SR compound next and never looked back. For a 1600kg car, I don't think you can beat those at the moment. I picked up 1-2 seconds per lap at every circuit I ran on straight after I changed to the Bridgestones. :D

PS: I don't think Dunlop make the D01J anymore - they have the D02J now.

PPS: Oh yes and the RE55s are street legal; at least when they are new..... watch the tread depth though once you have done a few laps! ;)

Beej

Dan - I'd have to say the RE55's that Beej mentioned are pretty hard to beat for a Commodore...

If you are buying new, i'd go for them. If you are looking for used tyres just for the odd track day consider the A048R Yokohamas - The V8 ute & IPRA runners use them, and so do the Combined Touring guys. By hanging around the track at a State round you'd probably pick up a set quite cheaply. Some of the more "cashed up" racers have been known to throw away tyres that have anything near 50% wear on them... ;)

Cheers,
Paul...

If you are after RE55's try http://www.kymdavistyres.com.au/

Even shipped to Sydney, they are generally cheaper vs any Sydney vendor

Great information guys !

The guy wants 1800 for the toyos with rims, tyres still look new. I was thinking of offering 1500. Handy to have them on a second set of rims.

Any idea what re55's are worth each ?

$400 each maybe a bit more these days. The link that Duncan provided is the cheapest anywhere, I think its because he is the Australian importer of them.

Bloody expensive but they are the ducks nuts of tyres, they took 3 seconds of my PB at Wakey.
