View Full Version : Sneak Peek
A certain bus racer will be helping me get ready for November 4th, thankfully the hardware just arrived.
That is, assuming i can drag Mitta E away from his most recent purchase (which happens to be made of titanium/magnesium alloy no less!)

Bravo Dunc, I'm sure you will enjoy these "undisclosed brand" brakes. The last time I drove a car fitted with them they were
Red too..... gotta be worth a few extra tenths around the circuit.:werd:
sorry guys was not tryin to be mysterious. all will be revealed in the installation article!

Would have been a long time ago Dunc. I'm amazed you can remember that far back :stick:
I look forward to seeing what you ended up with and how they perform.

Nice score on brake package  . Why is it every time I feel like the gap is closing (on track), you go & do a bad thing (for me) like this :headbang:  .
O/t: Titanium/magnesium alloy, hey??? I like the sound of it/them already :D.

:hmmm: Does it start with Oz and end in Racing ???
Finally decided to give the stockers a rest hey Dunc? They were probably the hardest-worked stock brakes I've ever seen!
Can't wait to see the install article.
Cheers,

Indeed SD, unobtainium........the most prevalent of the vehicular metals and which causes the budding car enthusiast the highest level of grief.

Almost as bad as walletpainium....
Well gents, with the generous help of Lautray, we got the new brake system installed on the monaro, finished about 6:30pm last night. There is absolutely no way I could have done it without Mr Bus Racer, so many many thanks goes to Erik. Only had a chance to drive around the block once (to make sure nothing fell off) - so no verdict as yet. Probably will have wait for the upcoming Eastern Creek track day for a ridgy didge assessment. Honourable mention to our "phone a friend" technical adviser, TigerSS (thanks Dave).
We had a couple of relatively minor issues along the way (mostly the aftermarket pads and braided line kit) but otherwise the bits just bolted right on. We have a lot of photos and will be putting up an article in the next couple of days. Things are a bit hectic at home atm with newborn feeding schedule (last few days have been, err, difficult) so getting over six continuous hours of backyard mechanic play time in the garage was pushing it yesterday.. Thanks for making the effort Erik.

The eastern beaches speed-shop was in full swing yesterday. Doing things like this is always fun, especially when there are no destructions (read instructions ;)) to guide you. So, the first side is always the "guinea pig".
Looks like a great kit. 343mm rotors makes the factory stock 298 & 286mm rotors appear puny  .
And don't worry Dunc... I may be calling on a return favour in the brake installation department rather soon too ;). Nothing like spending 6hrs in the garage to get the missus' blood going :toetap: .

HEY!! Its not the size that counts, its how you use it ahhh them :toetap: :stick:
Looking forward to the EC track day, only a week now. Also looking foward to seeing Duncs veryhighsupermegaultra brakes and the install :mgun:

Man your eyes are good (for a senior :stick: ;)) 225 fronts, 245 rears. Balances the car B-E-A-utifully. Well proven combo by LSX-402 & tried it myself on my car... basically negates the oversteer issues I was having with the rear swaybar too :D. A pleasure to drive now, rather than fight the car every corner.
Would need to ask Dunc about $$$, but pretty sure he gets them from interstate.

Oh its ok mine have different rubber....
Nice rims...
the cheapest place for re55's i've found are http://www.kymdavistyres.com.au and the 18" are about $400 each. Awseome tyres for circuit.

Oi!! I thought we had this discussion at Wakefield a couple months ago. Nothing wrong with standard brakes with good pads/fluid we both said!! :yep:
Then you go and do this!!! :headbang: Nah seriously always a good investment. Very nice.

Standard brakes with good pads & fluid = OK.
Harrops with good pads & fluid = :woot:
I killed a set of HSV Premium brakes with good pads & fluid, imagine what would have happened to standard Holden brakes -----> :flame:

Yeah we were talking about 1700 kilo sedans and munro's not 2 tonne Coupe4's :stick: Also since we mostly do 5 lap sessions between cool down laps.
My HSV premiums seem to do as good as possible on my car as I can hit ABS with race tyres, but would love some bigger ones for sure. Probably wouldn't give any better stopping power, but definately more endurance if I wanted to start doing more than 8-10 lap sessions.
Another thing on the list of wants..

We have a lot of photos and will be putting up an article in the next couple of days.
:toetap: :toetap: :toetap:
A set of slotted rotors with premium pads and fluid is good enough for casual track days. But I would qualify that for a standard weight car and manual transmission. Heavier cars, especially combined with an auto tranny, I think they are more punishing on brakes, and perhaps the stocker system isnt quite up to a circuit day... But for my application, I was amazed at how the OEM system performed. However, as my car was getting more power, and i was pushing the car harder, I found the front rotors only lasting one or two track days. I was contemplating a set of stocker sized DBA5000's ($370 each) which would shave another 2.3kg off per corner (alloy hat) combined with the 5kg weight saving with the oz racing rims (each) not too shabby!...
but again, even the 5000's would only last perhaps two days (same rotor material as the 4000's)..
So I thought i would try the four-pot 343mm harrop system; At $3900; I think it is probably the best value package around. I was unable to test the system at Eastern Creek last Saturday; as it rained all day. And as Troy will confirm; I was a sissy pants, leaving my car in the garage all day. But the big question will be, how will this harrop entry level package stand up to a full day at Wakefield? Will the rotors only last a couple of days? If I chew through the rotors as before, and/or I dont see much braking performance improvement on track, I will just sell the kit, and go back to "consumable" OEM sized replacement components (probably DBA5000's). I just can't spend $8000 on brakes; and $1000 on rotors thereafter. Ideally, the larger 343mm rotors with four piston calipers might not work as hard; and the components will last longer. Of course, you pay for that upfront anyway... If the braking performance does increase, maybe I will just push that much harder again, and still chew through pads and rotors anyway? So who knows really; but I am keen to get a dry track to find out! I'm not afraid to go back to the stocker system if the net gains are not realised.
:toetap: :toetap: :toetap:
Allan, we had some issues with the brake system (actually, it was the aftermarket RedStuff pads) - which were so bad, I nearly took the system off the car! But it's now sorted (required some pad massaging) and it seems good now. The wrte up will include the good, with the bad.

I think I mentioned this to you Dunc but I know Steve has done around 25,000kms on his Harrops ... including several track days. I don't believe he has changed the rotors yet, but I could well be wrong. Steve ???
If you haven't ever seen Steve on a race track, he doesn't go easy on the car, and it's a 2.2 tonne car too. He does have the 381mm jobs but I assume Harrop probably makes there rotors out of the same stuff, just different sizes.
Anyway ... as you said, it will be very interesting to see how you go with the kit. I'm also very intrigued to hear about the problems you had :toetap: If the kit doesn't do what you want and you decide to go back to stockers, well sort of stockers, I'll be very interested in that too.

I will be awaiting the results with a keen eye!! Very interested in how you get on. Might bring bigger brakes from the bottom of my want list up a bit..
Interesting you were going through rotors that quickly Duncan? Those Ferodo 2500 must be pretty hard pads. With the greenstuff I am finding quite a bit of pad wear but not much rotor wear. Have done 3 wakefield track days, a wakefield supersprint, a hillclimb day and 18 months of street driving and still got fair bit of rotor left, but I have been through 1 and half sets of greenstuff.
In any case those bigger harrops wont be working nearly as hard as your standard ones so I reckon longevity will be much much better.

Crap I was going to try the reds or yellows next. Doesn't sound good.
