View Full Version : Wakefield Park Private Track day Thurs 31st May
EL-346

Hey All,
Not sure if anyone is interested but i have organised a private wakefield park track day to be held on thursday 31st may 2007.
There are a very diverse range of cars attending, from VL Turbos to 5.7L's to charades. Any car is welcome.
We will be leaving south sydney about 6.30am to arrive at the track by 8.30am. Licenses, scruitineering and drivers briefing will be done until 9am and then its all track time til 4pm.
As i said any road or race car is welcome as long as it passes a basic safety check such as secure battery, no major leaks, brake lights working, drivers seat belt etc.
As for the cost, the total cost that i have to pay Wakefield is broken up into the following:
Track Hire: $2050
Insurance: $800
Ambulance: $495
That brings the total to $3345. Divide that by how many cars attend and thats the cost. I don't have a definate answer yet but i anticipate it to be around 130 - 140 each. Last day i organised we have 21 cars and this was an ideal number as there was unlimited track time and not one person had to wait in line in the pits like you do on open days but the cost was a bit higher.
This will be an awesome day. If you don't have a wakefield license you need one which is valid for one year and costs $50. You also need suitable clothing and a helmet, plus your car must pass a basic safety check which most of you are probably already aware of.
I have paid wakefield their deposit so this is set in stone, if you can commit to coming 100% send me a PM and ill send out my bank details for your deposit ($50 deposit, final payment end of april when numbers are finalised).
Cheers

i never done any research about cucuit racing so sorry about the dumb questions. Is all the cars on the track at the same time? like a race?
EL-346
25-03-2007, 06:52 PM
There is about 10 cars spread out on the track at the same time but it is not a race. Safety is the most important aspect of the day to me, there are strict rules for over taking and distance must be kept between cars at all times. You can go at your own pace, there will be both beginners and experienced drivers alike at this day. The track is big enough to accomodate for all types of drivers. Last day i ran went very smoothly with no dramas what so ever (except a few people pulling out the night before!).
As i said safety and enjoyment is paramount, while you test your cars and your own abilities there is a pretty good chance you will lose control and come off the track at some point, any driver that endangers themselves or anyone else on the track by driving reckless (eg doing a donut on purpose at the start of the straight or something stuipid like that), they will be red flagged, if it happens a second time they will be out the gate. Rules are pretty simple, no burnouts, no donuts, no riding up other drivers rear bars, if over taking the driver in front of you must acknowledge they have seen you before you can overtake, apart from that it's pretty much do what you want.
Hope that answers some of your questions :)

13 cars so far, another 6 or so that i need to collect deposits from. This day is set in stone as i have paid wakefield their deposit.
If you can commit 100% to this, send me a PM and ill send the bank details for your deposit ($50) which i need ASAP. Full payment is required by the end of April. I can't add people to the official list unless i have a deposit, not saying anyone here is going to stuff me around and pull out but money talks, im sure you all understand :) My last day i had a fair few people pull out the night before and it was all just pay everything on the day so the people that did turn up had to fork out extra thats why i am taking a deposit first and then full payment before the date if anyone was wondering.
Also the cost is per car not per driver, if you have a partner or a good mate that you would let drive your car, then you can split the cost.
Cheers

A bit more information.
You don't need a Wakefield License if you already have a CAMS L2S license.
One passenger is allowed in your car all day for "learning purposes" but they must have a wakefield or CAMS L2S license. The minimum age for passengers is 17 and passengers must have their window up at all times. No children under 16 are permitted in the pit area.
Spectators are more than welcome and free of charge.
Race and road cars are welcome as long as they pass the basic safety check which consists of secure battery and seat belt, secure drivers seat, brake lights working, no major leaks, drivers window working (if electric).
I haven't decided a meet point as of yet, last year it was Liverpool KK's but that was a bit out of the way, there is a servo on the freeway about 20 mins out from campbelltown with a truck stop, i am thinking that we will meet there but this will be confirmed at a later date.
As for costs (approx depending on final numbers):
Drivers: $140 ($50 deposit then $90 end of april), must have wakefield license
Passengers: $20 (must have a wakefield license too)
Spectators: Free
There is a cafe on site which is open.
Photographer for the day is Kyle.
Anymore questions just ask!

Ez I can pay yet as I have to put in for annual leave at work to attend this one and that will take about two weeks. So if I put it in tomorrow I should know in about two weeks.
But I wanna come and play with me NEW (OLD) RE55's.
I have one question and maybe a suggestion.
Is there a fast group and not so fast group rotation or sessions?
Just wondering as Ill be going out to try and get a PB :)
Troy
EL-346
27-03-2007, 04:58 PM
I have never run sessions in the past due to the low numbers there has always been plenty of distance between cars on the track. We will only have about 25 cars this track day which is ideal. There are a few beginners but most of the guys on that list have been to a few track days and most of them would have been doing 1.15's at least last track day.
Last day a fair few people packed up and left a bit early so i could allocate some time for the people who want to better their PB's that have gone quick throughout the day. This would probably be in the last hour of track time.
I actually attended a private day on my first track day years ago now but they broke it up into sessions, there were more experienced drivers than beginners and the beginners got hardly any track time which i was not impressed about when we all paid the same amount. The last thing i want is for people to feel like they are not getting their money's worth.
I'm open to any suggestions guys, keep them coming, but if people are concerned about their lap times we will definately have to organise something for them too :)
Out of interest what sort of times are people doing? Im a 1.15. I forgot to mention we don't have official lap timing but i am willing to pay for official lap timing (Its $385 per day plus $15 per car which works out about $30 per driver for 25 drivers), i will run this through the other guys as well.

Sorry, hi Pascal, I posted right under your first post and didnt say hi.

Ez, I run 1.13's, Dunc and EriKKKK run 1.10 to 1.12's I think, I know they have each done 1.10's.
I think if you have the track for the day and will be running it then you could do 30 minute sessions. This gives the cars and the drivers a good break in between sessions.
Also I think that seeing as though any one can jump in any car's pas seat that we should get some of the beginners in some of the faster more skilled drivers cars to see where they could be going wrong.
Also I think at the start of the day for the beginners, get those "skilled" drivers out and have the beginners or anyone that wants to learn follwing the "Skilled" driver to get used to the track and the correct lines.
Just some ideas.

I'd suggest a couple of things if you're planning to run sessions.
1. Make them 20 minute sessions.
2. Have 3 groups
This way, each groups session is at the same time each hour. 20 minutes is more than enough for (most) road cars, whose brakes and tyres will be getting quite tired by then. Its also easy to mark each car with a coloured sticker to see which group they belong to.
EL-346
28-03-2007, 09:42 AM
Has anyone been to a track day with 25 cars (that is what we will have) or less that has run sessions, and been to another one with 25 cars or less that hasn't run sessions, if so what did you prefer? If we can run this day better i am all for it, but i just don't think sessions all day long is the most efficent way of doing it with such minimal cars when most drivers are in the intermediate range anyway.
Last track day Ben and I did there were points in the day that there were only 3 or 4 cars on track. After lunch most of the inexperienced drivers or drivers with pos VL's like us :p took it very easy and the more experienced drivers with cars that held up had plenty of track time,i'm pretty sure Doug (BLO-06L) beat his PB too. I am waiting for him to sign up as he was one of the quickest last day to give his opinion on this and whether he thinks sessions are necessary.
Out of the list above there are only 5 or so guys that has gone quicker than 1.14's, they were the ones mainly on the track after lunch. I actually only went out there 2 times in the remaining 3 hours, this was also the same with Ben and a lot of other guys. 50% of people actually left early giving the expereinced guys the last hour to themselves.
If most of the beginners and intermediate drivers stayed off after lunch, the expereinced guys would have to wait 40 mins between sessions when they could be out there already. We also want people to be at liberty to choose to drive whenever they want based on their ability and how well their car will hold up.
I guarantee you there is more than enough room on the track for only 25 drivers. I have nothing against sessions, if there are a large amount of cars (40 or more) with a broad range of driver ability then sessions is the only way to go, but for a small amount of cars you will find they aren't necessary.
EL-346
28-03-2007, 09:55 AM
Limiting the amount of cars on the track to 10 or so at any one time would be better than sessions for a smaller group of cars. People would only have to wait a few mins if that to get on track and people could still choose when they wanted to drive without being restricted to their session. 10 cars on track gives plenty of breathing room. I know some of you guys are worried about being held up by slow drivers, this won't be the case as most drivers on the list are in the intermediate range anyway and i really cant stress enough that you will have plenty of opportunities to chase your PB's, especially after lunch.
Ben has suggested we do this for the morning. The morning we can limit the amount of cars to 10 at any one time. After lunch you will find it is not necessary as there was never more than 10 cars on the track last time. As the day goes on there is less and less cars on the track, i don't think i can say it enough times and stress just how good having low numbers really is.
Mate IMHO 25 cars on wakefield is chockers
I have been on there with about 10 or so and it was busy to me.
I have a tendancy to use a lot of track at times:up2sum: and would want to slide past some beginner an make them freak out then wanna have a crack at me in the pits.
Whats in control to me is way scary and outcontrol to some others.
I think two sessions per hour of 30 minutes would be good.
Have Group A and B
A= Faster or more experienced
B= Beginer to intermeadiate
A can join in on B's session but not the other way around.
A's can go out onto the track and help the B's with there lines EG Turn in/Apex/turn out points.
Which reminds me, will you be putting out markers for these points for the beginers?
If B's decide that they are confident and wanna move up to A's then they see you and you give them a A sticker to put on the windscreen.
Just my thoughts.

This is a good solution. I've done exactly this when organising days at Wakefield before - normally for lots more than 25 cars, but the theory is the same. In the morning everyone is keen, so need to be kept under control (a little). In the afternoon, people get tired, cars get tired, etc, so there is less demand for track time.
Either way, with a mixed group of people with experience, and inexperience, you want to limit the track density to about 8-10 cars.

LOL i didn't mean 25 cars on the track all at once!!!!!!
I'm at work atm, i'm trying to get all the guys to sign up, especially Doug who is very experienced to give his opinion on this.

I don't think we need to separate cars... Open days have 20 cars max at any one time (officially). With all day racing, there is plenty time to choose when to go out or stay in pits. Remember, I'm sure you'll want to give both car & driver rests, & these breaks won't all conicide at the same time. Just leave it as it is :).

Fair enough Erik but when you get a great clean lap and think your heading for a 1.10 or faster and get caught behind a beginner at the last turn, dont come complaining to me as all you get is "Talk to the hand sister" :lmao:

Hey guys, Nice forum.
I dont think sessions are necessary with the minimal amount of cars that will be on this day. I garauntee that you will at no stage get all 25 cars on track at one time. The last time I was at Wakefield there were 21 cars there, and i didnt have to wait to get on the track at all, and only got caught behind traffic once or twice all day. A couple of times i was out there were only 2 cars on the track!
I just think that having sessions with such a small amount of cars will stop people getting as much time out on the track as they would like.
Looking forward to it!
Cheers
Scott.

FWIW, at Wakefield open track days that i have been to, they dont allow more than 15 cars on the track at any one time. Do they have any such regulation for a private day? (probably not)
25 does sound like too much, but i dont think everyone would be on the track at the one time anyway. Perhaps just see what happens, if there is an obvious issue, we could split it into groups thereafter.
Private days you're allowed to run as you please, though they probably still have a limit Dunc :)
When we ran a day, we had 40 cars and 10 bikes, split up into 4 groups, pro, mid, learner and bike.
Worked very very well, and no problems at all :)

IMO even 15 on the track at a time is too many. There is no regulation for private days but most people would feel more comfortable with no more than 10 at any one time.

What do you think about having a little "race" or "event" at the end of the day, just for fun :up2sum:
You could have a few different catagories, 10 laps per event.
Say...

Race two, fun class (more street set up cars IE Not Dunc and Erik)

Sorry to interject in something that I'm not attending and technically doesn't involve me but that's a very big assumption.
The minute you start making a fun event "competitive" you are asking for trouble IMO. Unless you can guarantee the experience of EVERYONE on the track it is a big risk (insert yellow Monaro here)
Mixing abilities up with ambitions and making a "race" out of cars that people drive everyday seems very risky. Judging from some of the other responses it seems I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Pressuring relatively inexperienced drivers into a "race" scenario ...
Good luck to anyone who agrees to this idea and prepare yourself for Mr 200%.

I too am not keen on this idea either. Waste of track time imo. A bit like bracket racing at private days. A forced period of waiting. No need for segregation.
We've got all day... you don't think there'll be clear enough track to cut a few quick laps? Drivers can stagger themselves for clear track. I think we need to remember not to hijack Erin's day, as she is the one organising the event. Suggestions I'm sure are welcome, but suggesters should not take offence if their idea is not enacted on.
Lets just see how the day unfolds :).

I have reserved my thoughts as i haven't wanted to offend anyone or make them feel like i think my ideas are superior or anything, and it is a bit intimidating being a lot younger than all of you but i will say this.
Ben or I have no issues with suggestions, as Erik said as long as no one takes offence if their suggestion is not integrated into the day. We have organised 5 of these private days in the past and everything has always run smoothly and we have had nothing but positive feedback.
At the end of the day most people are attending because it is a fun learning experience, not to be competitive. There are some guys that don't care about taking the correct lines, some guys that don't care about their lap time, and are only attending because it is fun.
Certain people become very competitive in a race, and will often ignore their abilities and limits to get in front. This puts everyone on the track in danger, hence why i said i was not confident.
As i said i think it is a good idea for the experienced guys, but allowing inexperienced drivers who often don't know their limits, esp in street cars who would be in extremely close proximity have a race would be irresponsible as organisers.
I am certainly not confident racing other drivers, there is no way that i would be by the end of the day, and i am certainly not confident about them being close to me! As i said certain types of people become very competitive and ignore their personal limits just to get in front of the next guy. A lot of inexperienced drivers also have the problem of having an inflated sense of their own abilities. I consider myself to be a relatively inexperienced driver, although i have run some decent times and probably better than most drivers my age but considering myself to be anything but relatively inexperienced at age 21 is naive and i would expect other drivers to be realistic about their own abilities.
Bottom line - The last thing Ben and I want is for someone to have an accident, or for someone to feel unsafe. The purpose of this day is to have fun.
Cheers

Although we have 24, i'm pretty sure number 8 will pull out at the last minute like he did last year, and number 20 i don't think will make it. On the EOI list skylines x 3 have been stuffing me around for the past month so we can scrap them off the list, Kurt + Steve on the EOI list i am not sure about also, it will be approx 25 drivers, possibly 26 or 27 but i am definately not allowing anymore than 30.
As for having a race, absolutely not, i can't really say anything that hasn't been said already.
Here is the plan of attack for the day:
6.30am meet at pheasant's nest servo which is on the freeway about 20 mins out from campbelltown, introduce ourselves and have a small chat, then get cruising. you are welcome to cruise with the group, or you can cruise down by yourself at any time you like.
We will arrive at around 8am, that gives us plenty of time to change tyres, organise licenses for those who don't have them, scruitineering (i will be doing this, i am a qualified mechanical engineer if anyone was wondering) and drivers breifing.
9am the track opens. As stated there will be a maximum of 10 cars on the track at any one time.
12 - 1pm is lunch although the track will remain open during the hour.
1 - 4pm is track time.
4pm the track closes, a lot of people like to leave a bit earlier to arrive home earlier.
Cheers

David, where did I say that this suggestion of mine had HAD to be done??
Where is the "pressure" that is Pressuring relatively inexperienced drivers into a "race" scenario ... It would be a case of have a go if you want.
I wrote "Just a thought, could be fun", well thats the last time I make a simple suggestion if you are gonna jump the gun and need premature post nasal sprays.
If you think that at the end of the day drivers will not be more confident then we have done something wrong. They should be much more relaxed and confident in there aqbilities and their vehicle, thus giving them the skill and knowledge to be a safer and better driver on the streets and highways.
Erik, if 10 laps is a waste of track time then you better be on the track every second of the day man!. A small colminating activity at the end of the day was, I thought, a normal suggestion. You all must me imagining me sitting here planning a Wakefield 1000 or something.
How did I highjack Erin day? I made a simple suggestion and that is it. Its her day and Im happy to rock up and drive and that is that. MAN!
Allan, yours is the best and most logical post after Dave's,
Ez, on track days I drive for fun and fun for me is pushing my car and myself to their respective limits. If anyone thinks that my saftey and my mates saftey come's second then :slap: they are wrong.
I dont pay money to drive my car on a track to drive the same as I do on a road or highway.
I strive to improve my driving skills, this involves sliding and going into sandtraps through getting things correct on the track.
What is safe to me will most likely be freaking you out but "its all relative"
Saying all this, If I can make this one Ill probably crash my car now.
EZ What you wrote was very well written and thought out, good stuff. I agree totaly and in the end its up to you if you wanna run what ever you want to. Have just skimmed the last few posts and a couple of things came to mind that you might want to consider.
1. As soon as you start talking about a 'race' you will probably find that Wakefield will have a whole lot more to say about your event permit.
2. Different levels of licences are required, either AASA or CAMS PC, not sure how many participants have these.
Don't get me wrong, its an interesting idea, and something that could be lots of fun for some people. I'd maybe suggest that if some of the faster / experienced people want to have a play, that they do it within the existing structure of the day.
Would hate to see (have seen it before) someone get a little excited and damage someone else's pride and joy. Its always a risk on a track day, but the risk is significantly magnified when the 'r word' is mentioned!
I'm still keen to try and get down there. If I don't end up participating, I'm happy to come and help/assist in any way you like.
Cheers

Hi every one. I'm Mick. Have been led to your great forum by Erin.
I am sooo looking forward to this day. Having never been to a track day i have a few questions hopefully some one out there can answer for me.
1. Is it worth bring a set of tyres just for the track so i have a set to get home on ?
2. What are the main points to make sure of before the scrutineering.
Thanks Mick (TOYVL8)
P.S. i supose i had better get to work with getting a gearbox fitted to the car. I am tipping they might pick that up on scrutineering :yep:

I've been to a lot of Wakefield open days and they have never looked at the car once. Are we being scutineered? (perhaps it is different for private days?)
As for tyres, if your budget allows, i would get a set of dedicated semi-slicks. Also, make sure you have some decent meat on your pads, and ideally run uprated pads, slotted rotors and uprated brake fluid. You might want to think about a power steering oil cooler as well. Oh, and bring brown undies.

I think Erins BF is a mech and he is going to do the scrutineering.
Mick, I couldnt agree with Dunc more, dedicated track tyres. I have used a brand new set of pads in one day, mind you Im known to make brake rotors glow orange but yeah, I would chuck some new ones on your car mate :yep:
See you there.

Mick - Ben is doing the scruitineering. It is a very basic safety check that consists of making sure the car has a secure battery, brake lights, drivers seat belt, no major leaks and drivers window in operation. It is compulsory that someone qualified does this on a private day.

Bomi you paid a $65 deposit instead of $50 (not sure why?) so its $70 for you.

I'll be coming along but what a shame, there are no possies left for me to drive. But then again, judging by my go karting effort a few weeks ago after the dyno day, I'm sure I'd just be more of a hinderance to everyone else...lol.
Besides, my scottish heritage means I'm too stingy to pay $135 to drive around a track. Oh, oh. Hope I'm not gonna have to take a holiday for that comment...lol

I think we got our lap timers from here (US Prices):
http://www.laptimerholders.com/proddetail.asp?prod=UL%2D201
They work very well, easy to setup.
For the factory brakes i used http://stores.ebay.com.au/Online-Performance-Autos_W0QQsspagenameZL2QQtZkm - i ran the DBA4000 slotted (not crossed drilled) together with EBC greenstuff and an uprated fluid (super dot 4.1). This setup was great for when i was starting out, and cheap as chips. Rotors were about $150 each and pads $110 for a full front set and $100 for a rear set. However that was VT~VZ i am not aware of the situation with VE Commodores. Contact DBA Australia and ask them if they make a slotted OEM replacement rotor? Or email tha ebay store and ask.
thanx hows your car going

We are not having official lap timing because most people don't want it and it would work out way too expensive for the minority to use it.

Hey Mick,
I have a lap timer the same as Dunc & Erik, I can't make this day because of work so I'll get my timer to Dunc before the day so that you can hook it up to your car. All 3 work from the same sensor so all you need to do is attach it to your windscreen.

Only waiting on redvyIIss from here so thankyou to the rest of the trackchat guys that have paid, a lot of the other guys on the list are mates of mates, you wouldnt believe that a couple of them have actually asked me if they can just pay on the day! LOL. I've made it very clear that deposits aren't refundable so hopefully everyone will pay up soon.
Last day i organised i made the mistake of letting everyone pay their final payment on the day, you can guess what happened, 5 people pulled out in the last week, and another 3 the night before! I would have been down for hundreds but luckily everyone didn't have an issue with paying a bit extra at short notice. This group seems to be a lot more reliable.
Also i am the youngest person driving on this day. LOL.

There is 1 spot left as number 18 pulled out, anyone know anyone that wants to come? The price you are all paying is for 25 drivers so i really need to fill that spot otherwise the $$$ are coming out of my pocket and im obviously not happy with that.

Erin, Andrew Cowley has paid just now. He is not sure if the reference is going to come through correct however.
it should be the last payment you get in the next 24 hours, so easy to identify i suppose, thanks.

Ben said he might be up for it and I figured between the 2 of you I would be able to get one of you to come.
You could always bring the XR6 that hasn't been on a track since the cam install has it?

Had to do the rest of my Cams license in it. The handicap race a the end of the day was the excellent. Had a VZ Clubby behind me and a 350Z infront of me. Clubby never cought me and every lap I'd get the 350Z earlier and earlier but kept passing me on the straight. On the last lap caught the Z agin at turn 2 and stayed infront. Awesome fun. A chick that writes for Wheels was there driving a brand new Cherokee SRT8. Very funny getting passed by that going 4 wide down the straight just before the braking approach for turn 1. Corty chopped it though before its space shuttle impersonation.

Well i just bought a run-around Ez, so that clutch will be delayed even longer me thinks... Oh well you'll get your chance to see my rear lights one day ;)
Erin,
Can you post this on the forums who are attending the event for me?
Photo cd's will be available from the day. Cost is $25 for each. It will include over 500 photos from the days racing action and paddock also.
I wont be able to do the cd's on the spot, That will just take way too long.
I will post them out to people who want them.
Working like this:
1. Email me with your quantity and postal details
2. I email back confirming quantity and send payment details
3. I burn disc's and post out to you
Easy as...
If you see me on the day and want a cd, tap me on the shoulder and i'll give you a business card with my email address on it :)
Professional paper printing and canvas printing with framing is possible also at great rates, If you are interested let me know via email.
Cheers,
Kyle.

Mick, on a regular open day i believe passengers are allowed, but they need to be signed up / paid up drivers.

Thanks for coming everyone. Was a great day!
Kyle and I agreed that I would buy the CD off him instead of him selling them individually, if anyone wants a copy please PM me, depending on how many people want copies it will be around $10 + postage.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y70/jackhofski/IMG_3012Medium.jpg
Some individuals have already bought cd's erin, I took 6 orders from trackchat members... at the original price...
I think next time, I will just charge one flat price of about $400 and give the organizer a master copy of a dvd and let them deal with it...
Seems so much easier! :(
Further to that...
If the TC guys who have already paid me, feel ripped off and want the difference paid, send me a pm please..
