This started yesterday when I found out I needed to claim some "reward" points and so I opted for an 8GB IPod Nano.

Even with a 6 CD changer in the car, I'm always forgetting to change them so ended up listening to the same 6 for ages. With around 2,000 songs on the IPod I figured that should be enough and decided it was time to modify the stock headunit to hook up to this new gizzmo.

I remembered Jimbo_Aus's thread on LS1 about modifying the stock 6 CD indash headunit, allowing you to plug in an Ipod or any MP3 player that has a headphone socket.

Below is the thread that Jimbo used and I followed this as well with extremely pleasing results. Two hours later and I plugged in Chris' MP3 player and voila !!! :bravo:

I'm going to run the plug into the centre console and have an incar charger ready to go for when the new Ipod arrives. Plug it in, 2,000 song selection and when you get out of the car, take it with you.

I also used this thread to remove the stereo which was the hardest part.

This is a great mod if you want to keep your stock headunit.

Cheers,

Scott

Did the same thing one bored Sunday arvo a couple of months ago....it works well.
The hardest part i found was trying to get a decent hot solder on the correct circuits without welding the rest of the board together!:o

The perfect tool for removing the headunit i found was a couple of bent up 2.5mm arc welding rods with the flux broken off them...coathangers are too flimsy.

just a warning guys - I did this to my VX head unit and after a few months it went dead?

Possibly my dodgey wiring :whip: or just good timing because the day it died was acctually the day I was on my way to have it replaced with an Alpine head unit, but its strange the way the audio just went quiet.

Has anyone successfuly used coathangers to remove the headunit as described in this thread? Damned if I can get the thing to unlock and pull out of the cradle. Its driving me around the bend! :swear:

I did in my ute about a month ago when i put a sony dvd player and 6.5" screen in. Ive also used one a few years ago in my mates xr8 ute to get his head unit out when it had some cd's jammed in it.
The old coat hanger has allways worked well for me. It must be our superior quaility coat hangers we have cause ours aren't flimsy there actually quite stiff to bend into shape.

Yep you were right. It was the strength of the coat hangers i used. I bought some stronger versions, stripped them back and it worked. :yahoo:
