View Full Version : Seen a rare car lately?
Hi guys,
I started this thread on another forum years ago, and it's still one of the most popular motoring threads there (2,000+ posts and counting), so I figured it might go well here. :)
The idea is, you post up pictures (no pictures are only OK if it's really worthy) of any rare metal you've seen. Two examples that spring to mind from my posts on the other forum (OCAU in case anyone was wondering) are: BMW M3 CSL (there's about 22 in Australia), and a 997 911 Turbo (not terribly rare, but not common either). We get lots of posts over there for older rare cars too, so anything goes.
I'll kick it off, with a gin-you-whine Corvette Z06 (spotted yesterday and today in Stockholm). 505 of the meanest-sounding horsies you've ever heard!   It sounds INCREDIBLE for a factory car. Unfortunately I didn't have the video camera out when he blasted it down a narrow street.
Cheers,
- Febs.

 God I love Corvettes ... very nice Febs :yep:
I stuck the pic in the media gallery, here it is ...

BTW ... Top idea Febs, I'll keep my eyes pealed for something rare, I hear there is a pretty cool Coupe 4 in Croydon somewhere, only 100 of those in the country. :stick:

Only one like the one in Croydon though. ;)
Hopefully I'll be able to add a few more cars to this thread in a few weeks, when I (all things going to plan) visit a little known racetrack in Germany... :D
Cheers,

Hey People
This my first post. Im a Wagga local, and hope to meet you all at track day in the future. Im not sure if this is a rare vehicle, but a week or so ago I was out the front of home with the camera, and heard a V8, Next thing this thing comes past....
http://www.trackchat.com.au/media/data/500/medium/P1010021_Medium_.JPG
Surly there couldnt be too many of these around.... haha
James
Hi James,
been waiting for you to say hi. Welcome to Track Chat mate :)
Its very funny that you posted up that pic because I was at the BP across from the Rev Fest and that car was at BP, the owners partner was sprouting that it was a blown V8. V8 I could hear, blown, who knows but if he is gonna drive like that then he needs to pull his head in. Surely he knows that doing a burnout on a public road will loose you your car for 3 months then for the rest of your life if you do a burn out the Police will seize your car and sell it.
Can almost see his number plate in that pic, what a bogan!
Anyway Ill climb down off my soap box now :soap:
So James, when you gonna show us the ute? Put some pics in the Media Gallery and then put them in a thread.
Troy :)

I reckon a shot of your old man's other car is worthy of this thread too.

ScottWill organise it, got some at home, but none on the web server. Got better pics of the EJ as well at home.
Still very hard to look at the pics of the GTS Scott, reminds me of how good looking a car it was, one of the cleanest shapes ever released by Holden/HSV .

During the install of brake upgrade, Dave and I went to get some lunch and take her for her maiden voyage and those of you who know where Dave and I live would appreciate just how out of the ordinary the car that pulled into the local BP was. This isn't a photo from the day cos neither of us had a camera but I nearly fell off the chair when I saw it and cut Dave off mid-sentence.
Any one from the file footage ;) Same colour too.

Cant say I've seen too many $400,000 cars in ye ol town, but there is always a first. Not the spyder version lie the one you saw Troy but the Coupe - 360kW out of 4.3L isn't too bad N/A either
Luke
Luke,
Saw one today too! Red 360 Modena, heading over Gladesville Bridge at a rate of knots (would've had to have been doing 150+ easily).
Then, coming back over Gladesville Bridge a few hours later, I saw a convertible Murci?lago. Seen quite a few Murci?'s before (even driven one (http://www.trackchat.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=357) :)), but this was the first convertible I've seen. Pretty sure these all have the new 640hp engine too:

There must have been a supacar cruise this morning. On the way back from Palm Beach just before Newport I nearly ran into the back of the car in front due to being distracted by a bright orange Pagani with rego plates "Pagani" or something similar, a old Lotus, 3 Lambos and several Ferrari's.
In all there must of been about 10 cars in a little convoy worth several thousands. No pics as they were going the other way and i didn't have a camera in the car unfortunately.:headbang:

When my work was located in Artarmon, I used to drive past these everyday, literally different ones everyday, and sometimes, if a certain rear door was open on a warehouse, then I could see up to 20 of the ladies - bloody awesome.
After 2 years of this, I became a little complacent till I moved my operations centre to Chatswood. Today I popped over to Artarmon to check the mail, and realised how much I miss seeing these things every morning. I would have taken more pics - but as I was driving, and the person behind tooted, I thought I better move on.
Sorry about pic quality - taken with phone

I saw the ute towing the F40 a few months ago coming up the Karriong hill. It must live (or frequently visit) the Central coast.
On my way back from Newcastle last weekend I took the old road home after Mooney Mooney bridge (like we all do:up2sum: :driving: )
Stopped at Pie In The Sky for a feed and low and behold a 1987 VL Turbo Calais wagon with a 5 speed manual in top condition. I believe only 200 calais wagons were made by Holden and the 5 speed is even more rare find these days.:D

I went down to a mates place this morning to see it fired up.... unfortunately it didn't happen due to a faulty battery charger, but should happen later this week.
There are two of these in my local area, one's just about ready to run, the other is well into its restoration and just about ready for paint. There are two others on the Central Coast.
There were 22 'production' cars built plus a prototype. The prototype was sold in the UK a while back and now resides in Germany. They were built in 1957 and all the early examples were powered by a 2.5 L 6 cyl engine from the (Ford) Zephyr 6.... anyone have any idea? (I'll let you know in a couple of days, I'll get some photo's before then).

That is our old car!! 1968 K code coupe, factory fitted 302, 3 speed auto. Used to have original 12 slot wheels when we sold it. I can't belive he has butchered it with the chome wheels. When we brought it in it was the only K code in the country.
Bloody chome.........:headbang: :puke:

Ermm....do I get a go or am I too old to participate...../
It's a Buckle. Built by Bill Buckle of now Buckle Toyota fame and had a 'glass body on a tube ladder frame and used Ford Zephyr 6 mechanicals. They used to go half all-right due to a fairly favourable power/weight ratio. Buckle himself raced one quite successfully for some years and there was a pretty quick one (I think it was Bill's) that had a Raymond Mays 12 port head on it vs the original Zephyr head which had siamesed inlets and therefore only 4 inlet ports from memory.

Bang on Seldo! Yep, it's a Buckle.
My mates Danny and Mark are each restoring one. Danny's is near complete and will be fired up this week (rebuilt Zephyr motor was too tight to turn over with a slightly flat battery on Sunday morning). He's got brakes to sort then she's ready to go.
Mark's car is pretty well mechanically complete and body is faired and ready for prime. Interior trim needs doing. His has Holden 202 cu inch 6 cyl power, tripple SU's from memory (it should fly!). He hopes to have it on the road before Christmas. Both cars have been fitted with front disc brakes (probably still got drums on the back).
We'll see them both down at Wakefield one day.
I wish I had the time to do a project like this. BTW, Ron Touranac (sp?) designed the chassis.

Having spent the last few weeks driving across the US, including a week in New York and a week in LA, I've seen so much rare metal that anything sub-$500k is getting a bit commonplace. It's crazy.
Honestly, I saw EIGHT Bentley's (2 Conti GT's and 6 Flying Spurs) in the space of 45 minutes today. More Ferrari's than I can remember, every 3rd car seems to be an S class (95% of them seem to be S550's), so many AMG's it's ridiculous, a couple of Aston's, etc... In fact I saw an SLK230 today and thought "wow, haven't seen a Merc that cheap in a while!" Every Merc around here seems to either end in "63", "55" or "550".
Having said that though, I have seen a few rarities. Most notably:
Ferrari F50! On the road!
http://www.trackchat.com.au/media/data/532/medium/Ferrari_F50.jpg
Merc McLaren SLR (the owner was given it for free, and believes driving anything sub-$1mil is beneath him. He's a designer with a boutique on Rodeo Dr - selling items such as $110,000 jackets and $95,000 bedspreads  ).
http://www.trackchat.com.au/media/data/547/medium/Bijan_SLR.jpg
Maybach (seen about 5 since this one)
http://www.trackchat.com.au/media/data/547/medium/Maybach.jpg
Electric-powered RAV4, recharging

Enjoy!

He's lucky there are people even richer than him stupid enough to spend that sort of money on crap ... unbelievable.

I met the owner of this car today...actually I was around at his place (drool) for a bbq!!!! I got to sit in the car and take some happy snaps but I can't seem to upload pictures for some reason!!!
He offered to take me for a ride one day....however, I'm not so sure I'd like to be driving at 250km/hr!!!! :lmao:
He started it up for me and gave it a few revs! You would certainly hear him coming!!!!

Ahhh....that brings back memories....hehe...I had one the same back in about '88 except red (actually not quite the same, that's a series 1 1/2, I had an early series1).
One night I had a little horizontal folk-dancing on the bonnet :D (seemed like an excellent idea at the time) :yahoo: .....cost me a whole new bonnet at about $7000 way back then! :yep: Not sure that it was also worth a house and a car and a life income though.... :(
I then subsequently sold it to the radio bloke at 2GB...umm......(resorts to Google....but remembers!) Mike Carlton, who I think still has it.
Ahh...the good old days....

Good taste Seldo, did you have a 3.8 or 4.2 S1?
 How did you trip over this old thread...?
I had a 3.8 S1. If you want to be really technical it was a quite early one commonly known as a "flat floor" version. (After less than 12 months of production, in response to early criticism, they later added a dish to the front floor to give a better driving position and a bit more foot-room).

Haven't visited these parts for a while, hence the digging up of old threads.
Early 3.8s are my fave. Familiar with the flat floor, love the bare dash etc (not so much the Moss box)!
We're a Jag family (some may call it a disorder) for 3 generations... currently in my garage... (the car, not Nanna... we sent her back to NZ a while ago!)

Nice one! I too have a soft-spot (in my brain I think) for Jags. That looks like a ripper MKV! My fave is a 2.5 Mk IV, but I've either owned or driven pretty much all of them up to current. (with the exception of C type, D, F and 220)

Now for some I have seen. I've tried to keep it to the truly rare vehicles, or at least the ones you just don't see on the road every day. I don't think I saw any of these in the rest of this thread...
