It would be great to have a go in the Targa Tasmania, im down here right now and will be at Bicheno when there a few sections happen there.

There are about 85 cars entered this year and there is a Rookie class where newbies get to do the first 3 days of it. This would be a nice way to start.

It would be good to see someone have a go at it.

I saw Eric Bana in his XB Falcon yesterday. It sounded awesome.

Pics please!

i always thought it would be great to try. What are peoples thoughts on the danger of road rally? If you come off, i reckon you are just about guaranteed to hit a tree, scary stuff.

I would imagine an XB to be a handfull too

No pics yet, i'll see if i can get some Thursday. I spoke to a bloke who had raced it a few times and done well. He said you dont have to push it that hard - you drive faster than normal but still within limits and being consistent you can still do well. I am not a circuit racer - but i reckon a car with enhanced brakes and on something like RE55s would be great. There are some very 'windie' sections but overall most of the roads are better than NSW roads.

hey guys, my dad has been circuit racing for 10 years in a series 2 rx7 (fuel injected 13b bridgeport with a bus exhaust). recently he finished (over 6 years...) a 1972 bmw 2002 as a tarmac rally car with the aim of entering into the targa tasmania. As a warm up race he did the classic adelaide in november. Its a really cool event without the hardship and endurance factor of tassie. His comments on the difference between circuit and tarmac rallying were on the circuit you race edge to edge, confident in the surface of the road, corner camber etc. But in the rally you still drive at 10/10 ths (if you want to win) but edge to middle allowing yourself just a little bit more room and reaction time.

What was interesting to me was with my advanced driver courses ive done (only 2 through luffy at oran park) i could be eligible to drive in certain classes of adelaide (if i paid cams the appropriate money). So you get alot of nutters with no experience and alot of money who buy 1970's porsche 911 (so many floppin porsches) going out and its really quite dangerous due to off camber corners, trees, vision, AND the pendulem effect of rear engined high powerd 40 year old chaisi's etc etc.

He was also disconcerted by the navigators role as you have their life in your hands as well and it takes awhile for them to learn your driving style and make the calls appropriately.

but at the end of the day, he said it was a lot more fun then circuit racing. Different crowd and atmosphere at the events too.

btw it sux as a support crew/spectator cause you just drive around meeting them for fuel and never seeing anything.

Targa Tassie is one of my life goals, I have every DVD (some in duplicate DVD/VHS) and have been watching since it started in '92.
I have no doubt I will be entering any year now, just need to keep up practice and driving skills because an early off in the race means big $$$ in repairs as well as forfeiting the entry fee..........which would equal big disappointment.
Also need a back-up crew of some description and spares.....tyres, rims, shocks, steering arms.....you can see how quickly this would all add up.
Not to mention travel expenses, accomodation and meals.
A navigator I don't know would be preferable because there is always the chance you may kill them. :hide:
Also have to be willing to strip that nice leather interior for some race seats, harnesses and a cage.
Despite all these obstacles I am still going to be there one of these years.
My previous mechanic prior to Sonny has entered it a few times, first time in a Triumph TR6 and then twice in an LX SS Hatch with 600+ horsepower......he swears it is the most fun he has ever had.

It seems like a wonderful event! Some of those roads would be out of this world! :yep:

Something i would defiantly want to do in the future! Something like this for the money would be a great buy:

http://www.carpoint.com.au/used-car/MITSUBISHI/LANCER/New%20South%20Wales/csn1142604.aspx

Has the safety of 4wd, the on demand power of turbo and good brembro brakes the only thing you would want to do is maybe fiddle with the ECU and chuck in a roll cage, fire exinguisher and strip out the interior!

A very nice video of last year for ya'll - Sorry Brock :(

I'll definately do Targa at some point in my life. I've always thought a twin cam Lotus Escort would be the ticket but a big HP Torana would be a hell of a lot of fun.
As I can only dream about it at this stage, I wish the telecast showed more of the field. You always get a lot of footage of the class front runners but the majorty of interesting cars don't get a look in. I know its all about sponsorship dollars but there have been some really unique vehicles that you don't see.
At least we have Steve Coad and Len Catlin to provide us with entertainment!!!

I saw the Longford street stage today.

Here is just one fun pic of Eric Bana's XB. He put on some great entertainment. The video started just after a big power slide then he did some more. It sounded awesome.

Certainly a handful Dunc. The poor bugger crashed it yesterday, luckily no one hurt. Bit of a story here (http://www.classicrallies.com/blog/index.php?/archives/360-Bana-crashes-in-his-classic-car-in-Targa-Tasmania.html)

It a tough event. Everyone says drive it at 7/10 and you should be ok. That works in theory but as soon as you finish the first stage you think I could have gone heaps faster. So slowly over the course of the event you get faster and faster, pull a few spots back and then BANG. That the standard run of Targa Week. Forgot to include taking out a rental car during recky. Cethana is one tough piece of road. One of the toughest parts of Targa is the fact there are lots of tress and shadows on the road which sometimes doesnt allow the road to dry all day, so 1 minute its dry then its wet and slippery. I take my hat of to the guys that run in it.

You see some really good drivers wipe out in this event so Eric Bana will be in good company by the end of the event.

Eric did that slide on purpose - the previous one was a slide as well. The crowd loved it. Sheffield was the next stage after i saw him.

Darren - i drove Strachan to Hobart in the afternoon and evening last Friday the 13th! It was a long tiring drive and just like the section you spoke about made me sick of the bends by the time i made it to Lake Clair. I drove behind some Porsche's back into St Helens and im sure the overall trip even when they arent racing would add to the fatigue a great deal.

The Targa race would be tough today in its final day especially i guess at Mt Arrowsmith and Queenstown.

I do not remember who won, but it was pretty good, R35 was a contender, but they still say, it's suspension is too soft "setup is not correct" that sort of thing. What do you expect from your car street / daily driver, not a song hardcore hack. I almost cried TV.
