View Full Version : AP Brake Fitting - Lots of pics

Here are some pics of the fitting of the brakes ... very simple, the flush / bleed of the brake fluid is probably the most complicated part.
First step is to jack up the front of the car and then prop it up on the chassis rail with stands.

We then used a jack on either side on the rear, the plan was to lift the rear with one jack on the diff but the rear was too close to the ground because the front was already sitting up in the air ... so this is option 2.

Nothing better than a mate with a compressor, thanks Dave ...

Old rear rotors / calipers.

We removed the rotors and then hung them from the springs with an old coat hanger. It could be necessary to give the rotors a good spray with WD40 or similar. If you are like me and wash the car every 2nd day it could be rather difficult to remove the rotors.
Basically we wanted to spill as little fluid as possible, so we left the old calipers hanging until the new rotors / calipers where all fitted up, then we changed the lines over as quickly as possible.
This won't be possible for everyone, the APs come with new lines but the lines on my car had only done about 8000kms. It was going to be much simpler to keep them than change them.

Make sure you give the hub a good clean, scrub with a wire brush works best.

Front rotor mounted up, pop on 2 wheel nuts to tighten everything up and hold them all in place. The last thing you want is to drop a brand new rotor !!! It also makes it much easier to line up calipers.

A shot of the back of the rear caliper, the 2 big bolts hold the caliper on. You can see the brake line attached, it's a bit hard to see but there are little guids that hold the brake line in the perfect position. These APs are absolute top quality, every little detail is thought of.

Front from a different angle ... it is much easier to remove the pads on the APs than it was on the Harrops. Pop the pins out, remove the backing plate and the pads pop out ... QUALITY.

It is a good idea to give the brakes a good clean with off the shelf brake cleaner. The rotors have a coating on them to stop any rusting, we sprayed the rotors all over and then, as you can see, wiped down all the calipers to make sure they weren't affected by the cleaner.
Best to get your side kick to do that ... thanks Dave. (Actually, I think I was the sidekick ... get the boss to do it then ...)

Here's a shot when everything is finished ... you can see the coating on the rotor still.

Here's a shot after bedding in the brakes, the coating is completely gone and the pads had a perfectly even sweep on the rotors.

I'm loving these brakes, I'm absolutely certain that everyone that has bought them will be stoked. The best thing for everyone is that there are now 100 or so high performance cars with the brakes to match ... well done Holmart.

Looking good........I was seriously considering buying some of those brakes from Holmart even though I have no use for them atm.
How do they compare to the Harrops?
Are you selling the Harrops? If so can you let me know?
My brother may be interested........couldn't talk him into the AP's from Holmart as hard as I tried.
Cheers Jake.

looks good.
good idea to use a dial indicator to measure the runout of the disc's in different positions, fit them to the position of least runout.
better braking then from less pulse if any, and less pad to disc gap on application. not entirely necessary but it helps improve things, is recommended by most manufacturers.
I used a magnetic mount indicator off the shock to measure.
what the grey coating on those paint?
Great writeup!
But i have to ask, what was wrong with the harrops? and will you be moving the C4 to AP brakes?

Nothing much ... this AP kit was to good to pass up at $2750 for everything (rotors, calipers, pads, fluid, lines) ... BRAND NEW !!!
I bought it to give them a try, they are bigger than the Harrops and I had heard favourable reports on APs from several people. Basically I thought I'd give them a shot and if I didn't like them I would stick the Harrops back on ... more than one person said, well before I got the brakes, "the Harrops won't go back on".
There was absolutely nothing wrong with the Harrops, I like the look of the APs more and they are a bigger brake. From other reports they will hold up to track work better also ... that's about it.

Do you now use a different braking-marker into the "esses" in Kissing Point Rd Nick?

 ... you don't know how right you are seldo, I take that road every 2nd morning (alternate between Kissing Pt Rd & Fox Valley Rd) ... up hill, shift it back to 2nd, hard on the brakes, turn in and gun it.
:bravo:
Lucky it's 4am and every one is asleep.

good write up Nick. they should be an improvement over the harrops. everyone that got one of the holmart kits got a bargin!
Nick,
should i clean the rotors before putting them on the car, and did you remove that zinc coloured coating from the hub area? Was there paint underneath the zinc coating around that hub btw?

Dunc,
We didn't, we sprayed the cleaner on the rotor braking area when it was on the car. Let it soak in for a few minutes and then went straight out to bed in the pads. Made sure the brakes bit first of course. The pads clean it all off, anywhere that the pads don't touch the coating remains.
Honestly, I'm not sure you would be able to clean it off anyway.

Nice write up Nick
 to you and the Tiger.

Easier to clean the rotors on the car Dunc.
I seriously doubt that the zinc coating would come off any other way than from the abrasive action of the brake pads.
We gave these a serious spray with the brake cleaner TWICE and it didn't even make a dent on the zinc coating. The only thing under the zinc coating is the metal of the rotor face. Just be prepared for a little smoke from the rotors whilst you're bedding them in.
This brake kit just oozes quality and I really enjoyed fitting them. Quality in product, fitment and finish ... this kit has the lot. Kudos to anyone who managed to secure one. :bravo:
