A bit off topic...I actually met Buzz Aldrin a couple of weeks ago in Washington. Good Guy. We chatted about the movie "The Dish"

Hey Bomi.
It was at the Smithsonian Air and Space musuem in Washington.
Brilliant Place. You walk in and Chuck Yeagers plane is right above you. Actual Apollo 11 Capsule infront of you. Missiles, jet planes...Saturn Five rockets, everything. The thing you cant get over is that it is all real...not copies.
There was a sign saying Buzz was to be there for a book signing. A massive queue formed to firstly buy a book, then another queue to get it signed. Using the olde aussie mentality, I told the missus to jump on the signing line and I jumped on the book line. Bought three books and headed over to meet the missus on the other line. Saved about an hour wait. The yanks were in awe of Buzz. Their jaws were draggin on the ground and they were speechless. I went up and said "Congratulations from Australia Mr Aldrin...I am aware Parkes NSW played a large part of you mission." He immediately said "Yeah...THE DISH!! have you seen the movie?" He was raving about it. In his words. "Great Aussie humour!"
Nice fella.
Another great musuem is the one near Dulles airport about 45 minutes from Washington. Its called the Steven Udzar HAzy Museum. This is an aviation lovers heaven.
Spitfires, Hurricanes, P51 Mustangs, Zeros, F 14 Tomcats, Eurofighters, The actual Enola Gay (Hiroshima) and the highlight, The Space Shuttle Enterprise and my favourite, The SR71a Codename "Blackbird".

Yeah I have seen the vid. Not a bad punch!
You will love Washington. You jump on and off buses that circulate the city. About $30 for two days unlimited ride from memory. SO much history. So many museums and mostly free!
You can see the theatre where Lincoln was assasinated, and visit the hotel across the road where they tried to revive him. You can have a coffee in the outdoor cafe that the CIA met with the soviets to avoid the Cuban missile crisis and potentially WW3, See the motel Martin Luther wrote his famous "I have a dream..." Speech, visit the Watergate building etc etc.
See all the monuments, Arlington Cemetery is brilliant JFK's grave, changing of the guards of the unknown soldier...very Sombre. And to top it all off, some of the best restaurants and bars in Georgetown/Foggy Bottom. Loved it.

Yeah your right. Resolve the crisis...not avoid.
The hop on hop off tours have either a recorded narration or a guide which tells you about the attractions as you go along.

Others you just stumble upon. (Like the Vietnam memorial) We were just wandering from the Lincoln memorial to the Whitehouse and there it was.
Seriously you can walk everywhere in Washington...if your keen, but you miss out on the narrations. You cant walk to Arlington or The Pentagon. The Pentagon is a bit of a non event as you cant take photos. They just drive you past.
We just set our goals on seeing Capital Building, Lincoln memorial, Whitehouse, Reflection Pond, Arlington Cemetery, Washington Memorial, Pentagon and a few Smithsonians. The rest you stumble upon.
Pretty cool to see Obamas Helicopters (Marine 1) fly over all the time.
